This is the other wine produced by the owner of Château Ausone.  Since 1921, the Vauthier family has had sole ownership of this adjacent property to Château Ausone.  On the map, one can see how these two vineyards are located next to each other.  On the ground, one can see Moulin Saint-Georges just down the hill from Ausone.  Ausone has the south-facing slopes, Moulin Saint-Georges is not so blessed.  As a result, its terrior is cooler.  That difference matters, which is why only Ausone is classified Premier Grand Cru Classé A (until it abandoned its St-Emilion ranking), not Moulin Saint-Georges.  But at 1/10th the price of Ausone, Mouline Saint-Georges is the wine one can fill up the cellar with and drink every day.  Bordeaux insider Jane Anson said it best in her new book: "If I had to pick one non-classified St-Emilion to load up my cellar and guard jealously, it just might be this one."  Don't just take her word for it, open a bottle and taste it for yourself.

Tasting Notes

"This property is owned and managed by the Vauthier family of Château Ausone. The 2015 Moulin Saint-Georges is blended of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 85% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it reveals a gorgeous plum preserves, licorice and blackberry pie-laced nose with touches of cedar chest, cigar box, black olives and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and very firmly textured with grainy tannins, it has a lively backbone supporting the generous black fruit, finishing with lingering savory notes. Give it a good 5 years or more in bottle and drink it over the next 20+ years." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2/21/2018), Rating: 94+, Drink: 2023-2043

"The 2015 Moulin St Georges has really evolved on the nose since I tasted the wine from barrel. There is still a soupçon of broodiness, but there are now complex aromas of blackberry, raspberry preserve, rose petals and a distant scent of the sea (just like the 2015 Haut Simard). The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, very precise and harmonious with a silky smooth, seductive finish that risks consumers opening this too early. Don’t! There is so much depth here that it will repay those with the nous to age it over the next 15 to 20 years. Anticipated maturity: 2022 - 2040. "- Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate (3/2/2018) Rating: 94, Drink: 2022-2040

Saint-Émilion is one of the most prestigious wine appellations in the Bordeaux region of France, renowned for its exceptional red wines and rich viticultural history. Located on the Right Bank of the Dordogne River, Saint-Émilion is a place of great beauty and a UNESCO World Heritage site, thanks to its remarkable blend of natural and cultural attributes. The Saint-Émilion appellation is characterized by a diverse terroir featuring a mix of limestone, clay, and sandy soils that provide the foundation for its distinctive wines. The unique microclimates and elevations within the appellation contribute to the variety of flavors and styles found in Saint-Émilion wines.

The primary grape varieties used in Saint-Émilion wines are Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot often dominating the blends. These grapes thrive in the region's favorable climate, moderated by the proximity of the Dordogne River and the buffering effects of the limestone plateau.

Saint-Émilion is famous for its unique wine classification system, which divides the vineyards into four tiers: Premier Grand Cru Classé A, Premier Grand Cru Classé B, Grand Cru Classé, and Grand Cru. This classification reflects the quality and prestige of the individual vineyards and châteaux within the appellation, with only a select few achieving the highest ranking of Premier Grand Cru Classé A. Until the re-classification in 2022, Château Cheval Blanc, Château Ausone, Château Angelus, and Château Pavie were the only four members of the Premier Grand Cru Classé A tier. Out of disagreement with the standard-setting governing body, Cheval Blanc and Ausone voluntarily dropped out. Angelus followed suit shortly after. With Pavie remaining the only member, Premier Grand Cru Classé A saw the addition of Château Figeac following a long-expected and well-deserved promotion.

Saint-Émilion wines are known for their finesse, complex aromas, and beautiful balance of fruit, tannins, and acidity. While they share some similarities with wines from the neighboring Pomerol appellation, they often have a slightly more structured and tannic character due to the higher proportion of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in the blends. With age, these wines develop a velvety texture and reveal an array of flavors, including dark fruits, floral notes, and hints of earthiness.
