• Appellation: Saint-Emilion
• Classification: Grand Cru Classé
• Origin: Right Bank, Bordeaux, France

Château Saint-Georges Côte Pavie is a historic wine estate in Bordeaux, located in the heart of the prestigious Saint-Emilion appellation. Saint-Emilion is one of the oldest wine regions in France, with a winemaking tradition dating back to Roman times. The Château has a history spanning several centuries, marked by periods of development and renewal. Côte Pavie refers to the sloping hillsides where the vines are planted, offering an ideal exposure for viticulture. This estate is close to Château Pavie and Château La Gaffelière.

Château Saint-Georges Côte Pavie has a strong family history, as the property has been handed down from generation to generation. Château Saint-Georges Côte Pavie has been owned by the Masson family since 1873 when Jules Charoulet acquired the property. In 1899, Adolphe Charoulet took his father’s business and developed the estate considerably. A few years later, René Masson succeeded him as the owner of the Château, and then Jacques Masson took over the chateau before handing it down to his son Philippe Masson, who still owns it today.

Château Saint-Georges Côte Pavie benefits from an exceptional terroir with clay-limestone soils rich in minerals, which impart unique structure and complexity to the wines. The climate of Saint Emilion is influenced by the proximity of the Dordogne River, which offers favorable conditions with hot, sunny summers and mild winters.

The grape varieties cultivated in Château Saint-Georges Côte Pavie's 5 hectares are typical of the right bank of Bordeaux. Merlot is the main grape variety, representing 80% of the vineyard, and 20% is dedicated to Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vineyard is 25 years. The harvest at Chateau is done manually to ensure meticulous selection of the grapes that embody the traditional know-how of Bordeaux.

The wines of Saint-Georges Côte Pavie are classified among the  Grand Cru Classé and have always been renowned for their elegance. Their finesse and their ability to age. Saint-Georges Côte Pavie is an exceptional property because of the quality of its terroir, which is in the ideal location of the famous hillside of Pavie. The wines exhibit a deep, intense color, often dark ruby or garnet, with bright reflections indicating high concentration and optimal maturity. The bouquet is rich and complex with intense aromas of ripe red and black fruit such as cherry and blueberry. These aromas are often complemented by spicy notes. On the palate, the wines offer a well-integrated tannic structure with silky tannins and balanced acidity that brings freshness and longevity. The flavor on the palate reflects the aromas perceived on the nose with the dominant presence of ripe fruits.

The 2018 vintage is a blend of traditional estate grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This vintage is notable for its medium to deep garnet-purple color. The wine presents aromas of black fruits, especially blueberries and cherries, with a touch of menthol and some notes of spring flowers and lavender. This vintage has sweet fruit, good purity, and supple tannins.

Tasting Notes

"This comes from the limestone slope between La Gaffelière and Pavie. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Côte Pavie comes skipping out of the glass with bright, cheery scents of warm raspberries, black cherries and ripe blackberries plus hints of red roses, menthol, dark chocolate and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-filling fresh, crunchy fruit with beautifully ripe, finely grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Impressive!" - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (4/23/2019, Bordeaux 2018 Issue), Rating: (93-95)+

"The 2018 Saint-Georges (Côte Pavie) is a deep, brooding wine with a compelling interplay of dense fruit and supporting structure. Blueberry jam, savory herbs, lavender, mint, spice and gravel jump from the glass in this potent, virile Saint-Émilion. Saint-Georges has really come along in the last few years. The 2018 is terrific and also quite promising. The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc." - Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, (April, 2019), Rating: (91-94)

Saint-Émilion is one of the most prestigious wine appellations in the Bordeaux region of France, renowned for its exceptional red wines and rich viticultural history. Located on the Right Bank of the Dordogne River, Saint-Émilion is a place of great beauty and a UNESCO World Heritage site, thanks to its remarkable blend of natural and cultural attributes. The Saint-Émilion appellation is characterized by a diverse terroir featuring a mix of limestone, clay, and sandy soils that provide the foundation for its distinctive wines. The unique microclimates and elevations within the appellation contribute to the variety of flavors and styles found in Saint-Émilion wines.

The primary grape varieties used in Saint-Émilion wines are Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot often dominating the blends. These grapes thrive in the region's favorable climate, moderated by the proximity of the Dordogne River and the buffering effects of the limestone plateau.

Saint-Émilion is famous for its unique wine classification system, which divides the vineyards into four tiers: Premier Grand Cru Classé A, Premier Grand Cru Classé B, Grand Cru Classé, and Grand Cru. This classification reflects the quality and prestige of the individual vineyards and châteaux within the appellation, with only a select few achieving the highest ranking of Premier Grand Cru Classé A. Until the re-classification in 2022, Château Cheval Blanc, Château Ausone, Château Angelus, and Château Pavie were the only four members of the Premier Grand Cru Classé A tier. Out of disagreement with the standard-setting governing body, Cheval Blanc and Ausone voluntarily dropped out. Angelus followed suit shortly after. With Pavie remaining the only member, Premier Grand Cru Classé A saw the addition of Château Figeac following a long-expected and well-deserved promotion.

Saint-Émilion wines are known for their finesse, complex aromas, and beautiful balance of fruit, tannins, and acidity. While they share some similarities with wines from the neighboring Pomerol appellation, they often have a slightly more structured and tannic character due to the higher proportion of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in the blends. With age, these wines develop a velvety texture and reveal an array of flavors, including dark fruits, floral notes, and hints of earthiness.

Footnotes on Futures, Pre-Arrivals, and potential US Tariffs:

1. On June 15, 2021, the US and the EU agreed to suspend tariffs resulting from the Boeing-Airbus aircraft trade disputes. Additional charges may apply at the time of delivery.

2. Futures are expected to be available for delivery two years after the sales (e.g., the 2022 vintage, sold in 2023, will be delivered in 2025 mostly, or 2026 if the producer ages the wine longer).

3. Pre-Arrivals are items currently stored in our Bordeaux cellar or in transit from France to the US. It usually takes 1-6 months for Pre-Arrivals to become available for delivery, depending on the stage of the import process.

4. Regarding futures and pre-arrivals, we cannot guarantee specific delivery dates, which factors beyond our control may impact. However, we will notify you once your wine arrives in our cellar.

5. While a buyer of Bordeaux wine futures locks in an allocation of the specified items, the final delivery of the purchased items from France to the US may be impacted by intervening and unforeseeable events. Despite our due diligence, additional costs or delays may be caused by such intervening and unforeseen events and "an irresistible, superhuman cause, or by the act of public enemies of the state of California or the United States."  In such circumstances, if a buyer does not accept unforeseeable costs or delays, the sole and exclusive remedy is a cancellation of the futures order concerned and a refund of the original purchase price. We are NOT liable for any lost profits on a canceled order.
