The Pommard appellation is located in Burgundy, on the Côte de Beaune, in the heart of the Côte-d'Or wine-growing region. Pommard lies about 3 kilometers south of Beaune and to the south of Volnay—two towns renowned as the nerve centers of the Côte de Beaune wine trade. The appellation is situated along the famous Route des Grands Crus.

Pommard is one of the Côte de Beaune's most renowned appellations, best known for its powerful, structured red wines made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes. The appellation covers more than 340 hectares, with 115 hectares dedicated to Premier Cru vineyards. Pommard is home to 28 Premier Cru vineyards, all producing red wines from Pinot Noir.

The vineyards of Pommard are located on east and southeast-facing slopes, ensuring optimal sun exposure. The altitude ranges between 250 and 330 meters, creating a microclimate that is particularly favorable for vine-growing.

The terroir of the Pommard appellation is among the most distinctive in the Côte de Beaune, imbuing its wines with unique characteristics. The soils are primarily composed of clay and limestone, with notable amounts of marl and gravel. Clay soils are more prevalent on the hillsides, providing the wines with their structure and power. The continental climate, in combination with the geological makeup of the soils, allows Pinot Noir, the appellation's sole grape variety to fully express its character.

Wines from the Pommard appellation are recognized for their deep, dark color, with red hues and mauve highlights. Aromas of blackberry, blueberry, redcurrant, cherry pit, and ripe plum are typical. With age, these wines develop more complex, wild, and animal-like notes. The wines have a greedy texture and a firm, delicate structure.

Some of the most famous estates in the Pommard appellation include Domaine Potinet-Ampeau, Domaine Joseph Drouhin, Domaine Pouchard Père & Fils, and Maison Louis Jadot.
