First Growths

The First Growths — Premiers Crus — sit at the very summit of the 1855 Classification and, for many collectors, of the wine world itself. Just five châteaux hold the title: Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, and Château Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac, Château Margaux in its namesake commune, and Château Haut-Brion in Pessac-Léognan, the lone Graves estate admitted to the Médoc ranking.

Four were named First Growths in 1855; Mouton Rothschild joined them in 1973, the only change ever made to the classification. Each is built on the Left Bank's deep gravel soils and led by Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.

These are wines of profound structure, concentration, and longevity, capable of evolving gracefully for half a century or more. Released in strictly limited quantities and traded the world over, the First Growths set the prices and the standards that the rest of Bordeaux follows.
