Santenay is the southernmost appellation of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, France, situated just below Chassagne-Montrachet. The village of Santenay lies at the foot of the Mont de Sène, and the vineyards spread over rolling hills and slopes, with altitudes ranging from around 220 to 500 meters. The appellation includes the communes of Santenay and Remigny and covers both red and white wines.
Santenay has a winemaking tradition that dates back to Roman times, as archaeological remains and mosaics suggest the early cultivation of vines. The area gained more prominence during the medieval period, particularly through the influence of local monasteries. Unlike some neighboring villages, Santenay has historically been known as both a wine-producing and spa town, due to its thermal springs. The AOC status was granted in 1937, recognizing the quality and potential of its wines, though it often remains slightly under the radar compared to more famous neighbors.
The terroir of Santenay is varied, with a mix of limestone, marl, and clay soils, depending on altitude and slope exposure. The vineyards has 12 Premier Cru climats and covers about 330 hectares, with roughly 258.32 hectares planted to red grapes and 72.40 to white.
Santenay primarily produces Pinot Noir for its red wines, which dominate the appellation. However, Chardonnay is also grown and used for the white wines, which are less common but increasingly respected. Santenay red wines are typically more structured and earthy than those from villages further north, offering a rustic charm with firm tannins and notes of dark cherry, blackberry, underbrush, and spice. The whites are fresh and mineral-driven, with citrus, white floral, and almond notes, showing a good balance between richness and acidity.
