Grand Cru Classé
Grand Cru Classé is the broad and prestigious foundation of the Classification of Saint-Émilion, ranking below the Premiers Grands Crus Classés but representing the appellation's deep reserve of high-quality estates. Some sixty-odd châteaux hold the title, which is reviewed and revised roughly once a decade following blind tastings and a rigorous assessment of each property.
It should not be confused with the separate "Saint-Émilion Grand Cru" appellation, a quality designation open to any qualifying grower; Grand Cru Classé is the classification rung, awarded by name to specific estates.
Built on Merlot with Cabernet Franc over Saint-Émilion's limestone, clay, and gravel soils, these are generous, characterful Right Bank wines that reward both early enjoyment and medium-term cellaring — and they remain one of the most rewarding categories in which to discover rising stars.
