Nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Brunello di Montalcino is one of Italy’s most prestigious wine appellations. It surrounds the historic hilltop town of Montalcino, located in the province of Siena, approximately 120 kilometers south of Florence.
The first recordings of the red wines from Montalcino date back to the 14th century. The Sangiovese Brunello di Montalcino style we know today did not emerge until the 1870s just after the creation of a single Italian estate. The Brunello di Montalcino wines gained a reputation as one of Italy's rarest and finest wines by the end of World War II. Established as a DOC “Denominazione di origine controllata” in 1966, Brunello was formalized as Italy’s first DOCG “Denominazione di origine controllata e garantita” alongside Piedmont’s Barolo in July 1980. The DOCG is the top quality pyramid of Italian wines.
Here, time seems to slow. Olive groves, cypress-lined roads, and medieval architecture paint a quintessential Tuscan landscape, while centuries-old winemaking traditions are preserved with pride. In every glass of Brunello di Montalcino, one can taste the harmony of nature, heritage, and craftsmanship that defines this remarkable corner of Italy.
Brunello is always made with the local tuscan Sangiovese grape variety. The climate of Montalcino is one of the warmest and driest of Tuscany, these conditions seem to be the perfect environment where Sangiovese grapes thrive. Today, nearly 200 producers operate within the appellation, most of them small producers or family estates. Collectively, they produce around 300,000 cases annually.
The Brunello wines are known for their garnet color and complex aromatic profile, typically featuring notes of red and black fruit with subtle hints of vanilla and spice.
At Laguna Cellar we feature some greatest wines from prestigious estates such as: Giodo Brunello Di Montalcino and Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino.
