Futures

Bordeaux futures — the En Primeur system — allow collectors to buy a wine while it is still maturing in barrel, roughly eighteen months to two years before it is bottled and shipped. Each spring, the most recent vintage is tasted from cask by the trade and critics, and the châteaux release their wines in tranches through Bordeaux's network of négociants.

Buying En Primeur secures wine at its first-release price and, crucially, locks in access to the most sought-after and limited bottlings before they sell out. It is also the surest way to obtain specific formats — magnums and larger bottles — and to guarantee provenance, since the wine passes straight from the château to your cellar.

Payment is made up front, with the wine delivered once bottling is complete. For the great estates and the finest vintages, futures remain the classic route to building a serious Bordeaux collection on the best possible terms.
