Cru Bourgeois
The Crus Bourgeois du Médoc are a distinct classification of Left Bank estates that lie outside the 1855 ranking, recognising quality châteaux across the eight Médoc appellations. The category traces its roots to 1932 and today represents some of the best value to be found anywhere in Bordeaux.
A 2020 reform restored a tiered structure, awarded on a five-year basis after blind tasting and an audit of each property: Cru Bourgeois, Cru Bourgeois Supérieur, and the top rung, Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel. Long-admired names such as Château Chasse-Spleen, Château Haut-Marbuzet, Château Les Ormes de Pez, and Château Le Crock have helped define the standard.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown on the Médoc's gravel and clay give wines of genuine classified-growth character — structured, savoury, and ageworthy — at everyday prices, making the Crus Bourgeois a natural home for both newcomers and seasoned Bordeaux drinkers.
