Saint-Romain wine region has a long history of producing high quality wines, dating back to Roman times, earning it the title "the land of vines” among locals. It was one of the first regions in France where indigenous people including the Celts and Gallo-Romans, began cultivating vines making it one of the oldest appellations in France. Saint-Romain was granted AOC status in 1947.
The terroir of Saint-Romain is characterized by lias, limestones and marls soils interspersed with clay patches providing excellent conditions for producing red and white wines with high acidity and minerality. Saint-Romain appellation is also the coolest and highest point in the area as the altitude at which some vineyards are planted is 400 meters.
Although the appellation produces both red wines from Pinot Noir and white wine made from Chardonnay, 80% of Saint-Romain wine is white produced from Chardonnay. Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris are also cultivated here. It is a very small, old and unique appellation that produces an authentic and complex wine. Although Saint-Romain doesn’t boast premier cru and no grands crus its wines are renowned for their strong character, intense aromas and deep flavors. Indeed, these wines have a distinctive taste with black currants, plums or citrus notes.
This appellation includes a lot of renowned properties such as: Domaine Jean-François Rapet, Domaine Henri Clerc, Domaine Alain Gras, Maison Louis Jadot and Domaine Vincent Girardin.
