White

Although Bordeaux is famed for its reds, the region also produces some of the world's most distinguished dry white wines. They are built on two principal grapes — crisp, aromatic Sauvignon Blanc and richer, waxy Sémillon — sometimes seasoned with a little Muscadelle.

The summit belongs to Pessac-Léognan in the Graves, where barrel-fermented whites from estates such as Château Haut-Brion Blanc, Domaine de Chevalier, and Château Smith Haut Lafitte age for decades, gaining a honeyed, mineral complexity. Château Margaux's Pavillon Blanc flies the flag in the Médoc, while the vast Entre-Deux-Mers and generic Bordeaux Blanc appellations supply fresh, zesty whites for everyday drinking.

From racy and citrus-driven to opulent and oak-framed, white Bordeaux spans a remarkable range — and the best examples count among the most ageworthy dry whites in France.
