The Second Growths — Deuxièmes Crus — are the fourteen châteaux ranked immediately below the First Growths in the 1855 Classification, and they include some of the most coveted names in all of Bordeaux. Drawn from Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe, and Margaux, they represent the deep heart of the Médoc's quality.
Several so consistently rival the First Growths in quality and price that the trade has dubbed them "Super Seconds" — estates such as Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Cos d'Estournel, Château Montrose, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Château Pichon Longueville Baron, and Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande.
Cabernet Sauvignon-led and grown on the Left Bank's classic gravel terroirs, Second Growths offer much of the power, structure, and ageworthiness of the First Growths — often at a fraction of the price, making them a cornerstone of the serious Bordeaux cellar.
