Right Bank
The Right Bank of Bordeaux lies to the north and east of the Dordogne River, a landscape of gentle clay and limestone hills that stands in contrast to the flat gravel of the Left Bank. Here Merlot reigns, joined by Cabernet Franc, producing wines that are typically richer, rounder, and more supple in their youth than their Left Bank counterparts.
Its two most celebrated appellations are Saint-Émilion, with its sunlit limestone plateau and its own evolving classification, and Pomerol, a tiny district with no official ranking whose iron-rich "crasse de fer" clay gives the world's most coveted Merlot. Surrounding them are characterful satellites and neighbours — Lalande-de-Pomerol, Fronsac, and the Côtes de Bordeaux.
The Right Bank is the home of Bordeaux's legendary garagistes and of some of its most exclusive labels: Château Pétrus and Le Pin in Pomerol, Château Cheval Blanc, Château Ausone, and Château Figeac in Saint-Émilion. Generous, plush, and aromatic, the best Right Bank wines combine immediate seductiveness with the structure to age for decades.
