Third Growths
The Third Growths — Troisièmes Crus — comprise fourteen estates in the middle of the 1855 Classification, with a particular concentration in the commune of Margaux. They span the Left Bank from Saint-Estèphe down through Margaux and the Haut-Médoc.
The tier is famous for over-performance. Château Palmer, a Margaux estate whose wines routinely trade at Second- or even First-Growth levels, is the standard-bearer, while Château Calon-Ségur in Saint-Estèphe and Château La Lagune in the Haut-Médoc enjoy devoted followings. Other classified names include Château Giscours, Château d'Issan, Château Lagrange, and Château Langoa Barton.
Built on Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and the other classic Bordeaux varieties, Third Growths balance finesse and structure, and they remain among the smartest values in classified-growth Bordeaux.
