Burgundy
Burgundy — Bourgogne — is, with Bordeaux, one of the two pillars of French fine wine, yet it could hardly be more different. Stretching from Chablis in the north through the Côte d'Or to the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais, it is a land of small growers and fragmented vineyards, where the concept of terroir reaches its most exacting expression.
Two grapes dominate: Pinot Noir for the reds and Chardonnay for the whites, each rendered with extraordinary nuance across thousands of individually named climats. The same variety, grown on neighbouring parcels of limestone and marl, can yield strikingly different wines — the essence of Burgundy's enduring fascination.
The region's four-tier hierarchy runs from regional Bourgogne appellations up through Village wines and Premiers Crus to the pinnacle of the Grands Crus. With production tiny and demand global, Burgundy's greatest names — from the Côte de Nuits and the white wines of the Côte de Beaune — rank among the rarest and most coveted wines on earth.
