Second Wine

A second wine is the junior label of a great Bordeaux estate — a separate bottling made from the lots not selected for the flagship "grand vin." Fruit from younger vines, from parcels that did not reach the top standard in a given year, or from the gentler edges of the blend is channelled into these wines, allowing the château to keep its first wine uncompromisingly strict.

The tradition is led by the First Growths and their peers: Carruades de Lafite, Les Forts de Latour, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, Le Petit Mouton, and Le Clarence de Haut-Brion are among the most famous, each crafted in the same cellars, by the same teams, as the grand vin.

Because they share their estate's terroir and winemaking but drink earlier and cost far less, second wines offer one of the most accessible routes into the great names of Bordeaux — ideal for nearer-term enjoyment while the first wines rest in the cellar.
