Laguna Cellar features Barolo, aka, "King of Wines"

Barolo is a red wine produced in the Piedmont region of Italy, specifically in the Langhe subregion. It is made from the Nebbiolo grape, which is known for its high acidity and tannins, and is considered one of the finest red grape varieties in Italy.

Barolo wine is known for its deep ruby-red color, complex aromas of cherries, raspberries, plums, licorice, and violets, as well as its full-bodied, dry, and tannic taste. It is aged for a minimum of three years in oak barrels, which gives it its characteristic smoky and spicy flavor, and can be aged for up to 20 years or more in the bottle.

Barolo is often referred to as the "king of wines" because of its high quality and status among Italian wines. It is also one of the most expensive wines in Italy due to its limited production and aging requirements. The Barolo region is divided into 11 communes, each with its own unique terroir and microclimate, which can affect the flavor and characteristics of the wine.

Located not far from Alba, the capital of Langhe, the Parusso family first acquired land in 1901.  Since then, it has transformed from a family-owned farm to a highly regarded vineyard.  They started bottling Barolo under the family label in 1971.  After 50 years of meticulous and passionate work, the Parusso Armando company now manages 28 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Monforte d'Alba and Castiglione Falletto.

Tasting Notes

Château Lilian Ladouys 2016 - "A perennial overachiever, the 2016 Château Lilian Ladouys brings the goods in 2016 and has a complex, medium to full-bodied, character-filled style to go with loads of blue fruits, incense, dried herbs, and a hint of violets. A blend of 62% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot all raised in 30% new barrels, this charming, front end-loaded effort is well worth seeking out. It should keep for 10-15 years." - Jeb Dunnuck (2/28/2019), Ratings: 92, Drink: 2019-2034

Château Faugeres 2016 - "The 2016 Faugeres is composed of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 50% new and 50% one-year-old barrels for 15 months. Deep garnet-purple colored, it features baked blueberries, stewed black plums and black cherry compote with hints of spearmint, cigar box and new leather. The palate is medium to full-bodied and laced with black fruit and savory layers with a chewy frame, finishing long with a fragrant earth lift. 6,000 cases produced."- Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate (11/30/2018, Interim Issue), Ratings: 92, Drink: 2019-2035

Château Fleur Cardinale 2018 - "The 2018 Fleur Cardinale is gorgeous. Supple, racy and wonderfully persistent, the 2018 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Blackberry jam, cloves, chocolate, new leather, licorice and sweet spice all build in a sumptuous, voluptuous Saint-Émilion loaded with class and potential. The question now is really how the 2018 will develop in élevage. Past vintages have been impressive en primeur but then suffered from too much oak during aging. Hopefully that won't be the case here, as the 2018 is really terrific. In the early going, the 2018 does feel a bit less extracted than in the past, and that is certainly a positive development. The blend is 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon." - Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, (April, 2020), Rating: 91-94

Parusso Barolo Mariondino 2018 - "The Parusso 2018 Barolo Mariondino is a bigger and more concentrated wine compared to the Perarmando. With fruit from Castiglione Falletto, it also has what tastes like riper, darker and more fleshed-out fruit flavors. This wine delivers lots of power (with 15% alcohol), stems, structure and large-scale tannins, as expected. It's a lot to take in. 6,300 bottles were produced." - Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (6/23/22) Ratings: 93, Drink: 2024-2040

"Parusso's 2018 Barolo Mariondino is a gorgeous, effusive wine. Bright floral accents, kirsch, orange peel, new oak, spice and mint give the 2018 its sculpted, chiseled personality. There is terrific cut and energy here. This is an especially fine showing from the Mariondino." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous (2/2022) Ratings: 92, Drink: 2025-2038
