Laguna Cellar Wine of the Month Selection for June 2021

  • Anwilka 2007 - A mere 7 kilometers from the ocean in the prestigious region of Stellenbosch, this fabulous red blend is one of the most stunning expressions of South African red wine to date.  This star of a property was purchased in the late 1990s and an extensive replanting of the vineyards subsequently followed.  It was a team effort among three friends: Lowell Jooste – the former 4th generation owner of Klein Constantia before he relocated to southern California, Hubert de Boüard of Château Angélus in Saint-Émilion, and Bruno Prats, the former owner of Château Cos d’Estournel.  The original vintage of Shiraz-Cabernet blend was released in 2005.  The blend beguiled the palates of critics like Robert Parker, who described it as, “the finest red wine I have ever had from South Africa.” Shortly after the glowing reviews of the press were released, the wine skyrocketed in terms of demand.  Anwilka continues to be one of the premier expressions of Bordeaux-style red blends from South Africa, showcasing some of the finest examples this unique terroir has to offer.  The maritime influence in the region, coupled with the well-drained soil yields perfectly ripe and concentrated vines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
  • Château Carbonnieux Blanc 2017 - The white wine of Château Carbonnieux is considered one of the top wines of Graves. Château Carbonnieux receives its namesake from a family with the last name Carbonius who cleared and cultivated land near Léognan at the beginning of the 13th Century.  The first owner was Ramon Carbonnieu, whose name is mentioned in the archives of Bordeaux.  The white wines of Château Carbonnieux made the property a global leader in terms of viticulture and were hailed in places like the Ottoman Empire as, “the mineral water of Carbonnieux.”  In 1786, the American ambassador to France and future President and consummate oenophile of his time, Thomas Jefferson, planted a pecan tree in the château park that still stands there today.  This 900-hectare property is one of the largest in the entire appellation of Pessac-Léognan yet is still subject to rigorously high standards and quality control.  The ethos at Château Carbonnieux is about gentle viticultural practices, aiming to preserve the wine’s roundness and mineral driven qualities.  Restraint is key here.  Château Carbonnieux Blanc is a iconic wine, considered by many to be one of the best of Pessac-Léognan.
  • Clos de l'Oratoire 2015 - This sister property of Château Canon La Gaffeliere in Saint-Emilion is produced by the star winemaker Stephan von Neipperg, whose other Saint-Emilion wine was twice placed among Wine Spectator's Top 10 Wines of the year in 2014 and 2017.  The goal at Clos de L’Oratoire is to generate a round, seductive, and sensuous wine capable of being enjoyed immediately or allowed to age gracefully in the bottle.
  • Château La Cabanne 2009 - Château La Cabanne is one of the older properties in the Pomerol appellation, with a rich history that dates all the way back to the 1700s.  Paradoxically, most of the facilities at La Cabanne today are brand new, as a huge fire destroyed the estate and the entire 2008 vintage in 2010.  But the vignerons at La Cabanne are a resilient group of talented individuals, they have not let this misfortune stop them from producing excellent wine.  After the extensive renovations at the property, the trajectory of the estate took a very positive turn and vintages have been increasing in quality with each passing year.  One can begin to experience this increase in quality starting with the 2009.  La Cabanne is an extremely small production estate that is presently owned by the Estager family who are famous for owning  other Pomerol properties like Haut Maillet and Château Plincette.  La Cabanne produces a playfully rustic and plump Pomerol that has more than its fair share of charm and the ability to age.  This wine is beautiful when paired with Asian cuisine and an excellent introduction to a rising star Right Bank property that had a spectacular rebound.

Tasting Notes

Château Carbonnieux Blanc 2017 - "The 2017 Carbonnieux Blanc has a very harmonious bouquet with scents of lime, white flowers, melon and grapefruit that gradually unfold with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a little more weight and persistence than the Deuxième Vin, though truth is that there is not an enormous qualitative difference between the two. But here I appreciate the salinity on the finish and I suspect it will age with style." - Neal Martin, vinous.com, (February 2020), Rating: 92, Drink: 2022-2038

Clos de l'Oratoire 2015 -"The 2015 Clos de la L'Oratoire is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc picked between 25-30 September at 45 hl/ha. Matured in 40% new oak, it has perhaps the most reticent bouquet at the moment, yet there is very pure dark cherry and blackberry fruit here, very "cool" aromatically and with several swirls of the glass it begins to find its voice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. There is good density here, very well balanced, very precise with perhaps the best tension on the finish that I have discerned in this particular Saint Emilion. This comes highly recommended." - Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate (4/27/2016, Issue 224), Ratings: 91-93, Drink: 2018-2032

Château La Cabanne 2009 - "Bright ruby and damson fruits, violet-tinged, this is just gorgeous. Plump rich fruit, softened by just over a decade in bottle. It has gentle woodsmoke and earth rounding out the already softened tannins, and overall just a juicy, rich wine that is packed full of Pomerol seduction." - Jane Anson, Decanter, Ratings: 94, Drink: 2020-2038
