Anwilka has been described by Robert Parker as “the finest red wine I have ever had from South Africa”. Anwilka is located in the heart of the prestigious Helderberg region of Stellenbosch in South Africa.

Only 7 kilometers from the ocean, this prime location within the renowned Golden Triangle is where the harmony of nature meets the art of culture, creating some of the world's most distinguished red wines.

Anwilka is the joint venture between Bruno Prats (former owner of Château Cos d'Estournel), Hubert de Bouard (owner of Château Angelus) from Bordeaux, and Lowell Jooste representing the home team. The grapes in their Stellenbosch vineyard are selected from 12 of the 40 hectares planted and yields are kept around 35 hectoliter per hectare. They are fermented in 7,000-liter “tronical” stainless-steel tanks and mature for nine to ten months in French oak barrels.

The name "Anwilka" is a combination of the names of the three founding owners of the estate: "An" from Lowell Jooste, "Wil" from Bruno Prats, and "Ka" from Hubert de Boüard. This fusion of the first syllables of their respective names symbolizes the union of their expertise, their combined passions, and their common vision to create an exceptional wine estate. "Anwilka" represents not only the heritage of the founders, but also the spirit of collaboration and innovation that characterizes the vineyard.

Anwilka stands out for its selection of grape varieties and quality winemaking practices, which play an essential role in creating exceptional wines. The main grape varieties grown on the estate include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Each grape variety is carefully adapted to the specific terroir of the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch, where the well-drained soils, maritime climate and gentle slopes provide ideal conditions for their development.

Vineyard practices at Anwilka are focused on sustainability and quality. The harvest is carried out by hand, allowing careful selection of the clusters and preserving their integrity during the winemaking process. In addition, environmentally friendly practices are favored, helping to maintain the ecological balance of the vineyard and ensuring the sustainability of the land for future generations.

With every bottle, Anwilka invites you to savor the culmination of tradition, innovation and a relentless pursuit of excellence, a testament to the enduring legacy of South African enology.

Tasting Notes

''Fleshy, brambled blackberry fruits, balanced and restrained, with an earthy smokiness, carefully-chiseled chocolate shavings, great texture and finesse. Winemaker Trizanne Pansegroux. 50% new oak, one year barrels for the rest. Still well structured, with plenty of tannic hold, a great moment to drink.'' Jane Anson, Best Pomerol 2020 Wines Tasted En Primeur (11/4/2021) Ratings: 93 Drink: 2021-2034

''Deep garnet. Attractive nose with ripe raspberry, blackcurrants, a touch of sous-bois all with moderate definition. The palate has a sweet entry with very fine tannins, nice purity with cassis, blackberry, red cherry with nice poise on the finish. Impressive, but it is curled up waiting to give more in the future. Classy. Drink 2012-2020. Tasted September 2008.'' Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate, (5/26/2009) Ratings: 92 Drink: 2012-2020

South Africa is located at the southern tip of the African continent, with its wine regions primarily concentrated in the Western Cape Province. The country boasts over 60 appellations, with the most iconic are: Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek, Swartland, Constantia, and Walker Bay. These regions lie within close proximity to the cooling influence of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, offering ideal conditions for viticulture.

South Africa’s winemaking history spans over 300 years, beginning in 1659, when Dutch settlers first made wine from Cape grapes. The industry grew under the influence of the French Huguenots, who brought their winemaking knowledge and traditions in the late 1600s. Through centuries of development, and despite political isolation during the apartheid era, South Africa has emerged as a modern wine powerhouse since the 1990s. Today, the country is regarded as one of the most prominent wine producers in the Southern Hemisphere, recognized for its fusion of tradition, innovation, and a strong focus on sustainability.

South Africa benefits from a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The proximity to oceans provides maritime breezes that moderate temperatures, especially in coastal areas like Walker Bay and Constantia.

South Africa cultivates a rich mix of indigenous and international grape varieties, offering both varietal and blended wines of high quality and character, with red varieties such as Pinotage, Pinot Noir, Cinsault, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, and white varieties including Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.

South African wines are celebrated for their distinctive character, balancing Old World finesse with New World vibrancy. White wines often showcase bright acidity, aromatic intensity, and tropical or citrus flavors, with Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc leading the charge. Red wines are typically bold, structured, and expressive, offering ripe fruit, spice, and earthiness. Pinotage delivers a unique profile, rustic, smoky, or fruit-driven—depending on the winemaker’s style.

Footnotes on Futures, Pre-Arrivals, and potential US Tariffs:

1. On June 15, 2021, the US and the EU agreed to suspend tariffs resulting from the Boeing-Airbus aircraft trade disputes. The Trump Administration has announced plans to impose new tariffs on global trade. Until further notice, the price of Futures and Pre-Arrivals offered on this site does NOT include any tariffs. Additional charges may apply at the time of delivery.

2. Futures are expected to be available for delivery two years after the sales (e.g., the 2022 vintage, sold in 2023, will be delivered in 2025 mostly, or 2026 if the producer ages the wine longer).

3. Pre-Arrivals are items currently stored in our Bordeaux cellar or in transit from France to the US. It usually takes 1-6 months for Pre-Arrivals to become available for delivery, depending on the stage of the import process.

4. Regarding futures and pre-arrivals, we cannot guarantee specific delivery dates, which factors beyond our control may impact. However, we will notify you once your wine arrives in our cellar.

5. While a buyer of Bordeaux wine futures locks in an allocation of the specified items, the final delivery of the purchased items from France to the US may be impacted by intervening and unforeseeable events. Despite our due diligence, additional costs or delays may be caused by such intervening and unforeseen events and "an irresistible, superhuman cause, or by the act of public enemies of the state of California or the United States."  In such circumstances, if a buyer does not accept unforeseeable costs or delays, the sole and exclusive remedy is a cancellation of the futures order concerned and a refund of the original purchase price. We are NOT liable for any lost profits on a canceled order.
