’’This Domaine is currently producing some of the best wines in the appellation’’ wrote Near Martin for Vinous in a 2018 report. The Domaine Patrice Rion is a prestigious wine estate located in the heart of the renowned Côte de Nuits region in Burgundy. The establishment of this domaine dates back to 1990, during Patrice Rion's tenure as head winemaker at the Rion family estate, Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils. He subsequently departed to pursue winemaking at his own domaine in 2000, constructing a new winery in northern Premeaux. In 2005, Patrice and Michele’s son, Maxime, became involved in the family business. This estate has gained international acclaim for its exceptional wines that truly express the terroir of Burgundy.

With a history spanning several generations, the Domaine Patrice Rion has deep roots in the art of winemaking. Patrice Rion himself grew up among the vines, learning the art and science of viticulture from a young age. His passion for crafting fine wines led him to establish his own Domaine, where he could fully realize his vision of producing wines of unparalleled quality and character. The vineyards of Domaine Patrice Rion are meticulously maintained, with a focus on sustainable and organic practices. Patrice believes that great wines begin in the vineyard, and he works tirelessly to ensure that each vineyard parcel receives the care and attention it deserves. From meticulous pruning to hand-harvesting, every step of the winemaking process is carried out with precision and expertise.

Domaine Patrice Rion produces a range of wines that showcase the diversity of Burgundy's terroir. From elegant and refined Pinot Noirs to complex and expressive Chardonnays, each wine reflects the unique characteristics of its terroir. Patrice's dedication to quality is evident in every bottle, making Domaine Patrice Rion a benchmark producer in Burgundy. Today the estate farms a total of 6 hectares of vineyards located primarily in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny. The domaine owns 8 monopoles from which it produces the majority of its premier cru wines.

Domaine Patrice Rion employs exclusively organic agricultural methods in cultivating their vines. They were among the pioneers in Burgundy to adopt the practice of training their vines higher than the norm, a technique aimed at maximizing grape ripening. During the harvest season, grapes are carefully handpicked and sorted twice. The first round of sorting aims to eliminate any unripe fruit, while the second ensures that only perfect berries proceed to the winemaking process. For Pinot Noir grapes, they undergo complete destemming before being fermented for around 12 days. Following fermentation, the wines are aged on their lees for 15-18 months in oak barrels sourced from either Allier or Tronçais. The proportion of new oak utilized varies, influenced by factors such as classification and vintage.

The Bonnes Mares appellation is located in Burgundy, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, between the two emblematic villages of Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis both are renowned for their exceptional terroirs and winemaking traditions. The Bonnes Mares vineyard covers around 15 hectares (37 acres), of which around 90% is in Chambolle-Musigny, while the remaining 10% is in Morey-Saint-Denis. It is bordered to the north by the prestigious Clos de Tart, classified as a Grand Cru, while to the south and west, it is surrounded by vineyards classified as Premier Cru. There are only 5 Grand Cru vineyards in this appellation.

The Bonnes-Mares terroir is distinguished by its limestone and clay soils, enriched with red and white marl. This mid-slope vineyard benefits from an east-southeast exposure, offering good sunshine and excellent drainage, essential for grape ripening. Positioned between the cooler climate of the northern Cote de Nuits and the slightly warmer southern areas, Bonnes Mares benefits from a temperate climate with just the right amount of rainfall and sunshine to nurture the vines.

Created in 1936, the Bonnes Mares appellation is dedicated primarily to the production of red wines, made from the Pinot Noir grape variety. Bonnes-Mares wines are renowned for their distinctive character that combines richness and freshness. The Bonnes Mares wine has an intense color and rich aromas with dark fruits like blackberries, cherries, plums often accompanied by floral notes. Their structure is clearly defined, and they are full-bodied rather than flowery and sometimes a little wild. The wines have excellent ageing potential, and can be kept for 30 to 50 years. This balance of acidity, tannins and concentrated flavors gives the wine a long and memorable finish making it one of Burgundy’s most prized and sought after Grands Crus.

Among the most renowned estates in this appellation : Domaine Comte Georges de Vögué, Domaine Patrice Rion, Domaine Bruno Clair, Maison Joseph Drouhin, Domaine Georges Lignier, Domaine Denis Mortet, Domaine Jacques Frédéric Mugnier, Domaine Charles Vienot and Maison Louis Jadot.
