The Bonnes-Mares terroir is characterized by a rich, complex clay-limestone soil, providing ideal conditions for growing Pinot Noir. The vines benefit from favorable exposure and a microclimate that contribute to the exceptional quality of the grapes.

Georges Lignier Bonnes-Mares wines are distinguished by their unique characteristics, reflecting both the appellation's exceptional terroir and the estate's expertise. Georges Lignier Bonnes-Mares wines are perfect examples of the excellence of the Côte de Nuits Grands Crus. They combine power, elegance and complexity, offering an unforgettable tasting experience.

The wines are mainly made from the Pinot Noir grape variety, which gives them a ruby-red color tending towards garnet with age. The bouquet is elegant, with aromas of red and black fruits such as cherry, raspberry, blackberry and blackcurrant. Added to this are floral notes of violet and rose, as well as hints of undergrowth characteristic of great Burgundy wines. With age, tertiary aromas such as leather, tobacco and spices may also appear. Georges Lignier Bonnes Mares wines have excellent ageing potential. They can improve for several years.

The Bonnes Mares appellation is located in Burgundy, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, between the two emblematic villages of Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis both are renowned for their exceptional terroirs and winemaking traditions. The Bonnes Mares vineyard covers around 15 hectares (37 acres), of which around 90% is in Chambolle-Musigny, while the remaining 10% is in Morey-Saint-Denis. It is bordered to the north by the prestigious Clos de Tart, classified as a Grand Cru, while to the south and west, it is surrounded by vineyards classified as Premier Cru. There are only 5 Grand Cru vineyards in this appellation.

The Bonnes-Mares terroir is distinguished by its limestone and clay soils, enriched with red and white marl. This mid-slope vineyard benefits from an east-southeast exposure, offering good sunshine and excellent drainage, essential for grape ripening. Positioned between the cooler climate of the northern Cote de Nuits and the slightly warmer southern areas, Bonnes Mares benefits from a temperate climate with just the right amount of rainfall and sunshine to nurture the vines.

Created in 1936, the Bonnes Mares appellation is dedicated primarily to the production of red wines, made from the Pinot Noir grape variety. Bonnes-Mares wines are renowned for their distinctive character that combines richness and freshness. The Bonnes Mares wine has an intense color and rich aromas with dark fruits like blackberries, cherries, plums often accompanied by floral notes. Their structure is clearly defined, and they are full-bodied rather than flowery and sometimes a little wild. The wines have excellent ageing potential, and can be kept for 30 to 50 years. This balance of acidity, tannins and concentrated flavors gives the wine a long and memorable finish making it one of Burgundy’s most prized and sought after Grands Crus.

Among the most renowned estates in this appellation : Domaine Comte Georges de Vögué, Domaine Patrice Rion, Domaine Bruno Clair, Maison Joseph Drouhin, Domaine Georges Lignier, Domaine Denis Mortet, Domaine Jacques Frédéric Mugnier, Domaine Charles Vienot and Maison Louis Jadot.
