Domaine Comte Georges de Vögué is a prestigious vineyard in the heart of Burgundy's finest terroirs. Located in Burgundy in the village of Chambolle-Musigny, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. The domaine is renowned for producing exceptional wines, and is certainly the largest in Chambolle-Musigny, if not in the whole of Burgundy. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé has been the steward of the village's finest terroirs for 20 generations. This emblematic estate has preserved and enhanced the viticultural heritage of Chambolle-Musigny, while remaining at the forefront of excellence in Burgundy.

The estate has a rich and fascinating history, rooted in over 500 years of winemaking tradition. The de Vogüé family took possession of the land in the 16th century and has maintained family management ever since, passing the torch from generation to generation. Georges de Vogüé, after whom the estate is named, played a crucial role in strengthening the estate's reputation in the 20th century. Today, Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, direct descendants of the family, manage the estate with the same concern for excellence and respect for tradition.

The terroir of Domaine Comte Georges de Vögué is exceptional. The estate's vineyards, including Bonnes Mares, extend over some 2.7 hectares within the estate. The soil is a unique combination of marl, limestone and clay, giving the wines a remarkable minerality and exceptional aromatic complexity. The upper part of the vineyard, known as “terres rouges”, is rich in iron oxide, while the lower part, known as “terres blanches”, is more chalky. The estate's vines, on average 40 to 50 years old, are cultivated using environmentally-friendly methods.

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé's Bonnes Mares 1990 is a true representation of Burgundian excellence. This vintage, from an exceptional year, has distinct and memorable characteristics that make it a wine of rare quality.

Tasting Notes

"Full colour: A great deal of depth and concentration on the nose.  Rich, oaky and very promising indeed. Full body.  Splendidly rich and concentrated.  Marvelous expression of fruit.  Still very youthful.  Ready, but better still in 5 years.  This is quite splendid.  Very impressive finish." - Clive Coates, author of the The Wines of Burgundy (October, 2005), Rating: 19.5/20

"While the Bonnes Mares is closed, the dark ruby/purple color and the wine's terrific potential are evident. Full-bodied, with a blossoming, black-cherry nose complemented by a judicious use of toasty new oak, this wine exhibits wonderful richness, excellent definition and structure, and a long, dense, concentrated finish. Anticipated maturity: 1997-2010. After a wait of nearly twenty years, these 1990s are the first truly profound wines to emerge from this great domaine since 1972. If the rigid oenologist who fashions these wines, Monsieur Millet, would throw away his filters, they probably could have been even more exciting. However, these 1990s are stunning enough to convince me that the resurrection of Comte de Vogue has begun. Interestingly, Millet has shown some flexibility and is now doing a cold maceration of 5-7 days before starting the fermentation, which has no doubt contributed to the black/purple color of these wines." - Robert Parker Jr., The Wine Advocate (10/22/1992, Issue 83), Rating: 90

The Bonnes Mares appellation is located in Burgundy, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, between the two emblematic villages of Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis both are renowned for their exceptional terroirs and winemaking traditions. The Bonnes Mares vineyard covers around 15 hectares (37 acres), of which around 90% is in Chambolle-Musigny, while the remaining 10% is in Morey-Saint-Denis. It is bordered to the north by the prestigious Clos de Tart, classified as a Grand Cru, while to the south and west, it is surrounded by vineyards classified as Premier Cru. There are only 5 Grand Cru vineyards in this appellation.

The Bonnes-Mares terroir is distinguished by its limestone and clay soils, enriched with red and white marl. This mid-slope vineyard benefits from an east-southeast exposure, offering good sunshine and excellent drainage, essential for grape ripening. Positioned between the cooler climate of the northern Cote de Nuits and the slightly warmer southern areas, Bonnes Mares benefits from a temperate climate with just the right amount of rainfall and sunshine to nurture the vines.

Created in 1936, the Bonnes Mares appellation is dedicated primarily to the production of red wines, made from the Pinot Noir grape variety. Bonnes-Mares wines are renowned for their distinctive character that combines richness and freshness. The Bonnes Mares wine has an intense color and rich aromas with dark fruits like blackberries, cherries, plums often accompanied by floral notes. Their structure is clearly defined, and they are full-bodied rather than flowery and sometimes a little wild. The wines have excellent ageing potential, and can be kept for 30 to 50 years. This balance of acidity, tannins and concentrated flavors gives the wine a long and memorable finish making it one of Burgundy’s most prized and sought after Grands Crus.

Among the most renowned estates in this appellation : Domaine Comte Georges de Vögué, Domaine Patrice Rion, Domaine Bruno Clair, Maison Joseph Drouhin, Domaine Georges Lignier, Domaine Denis Mortet, Domaine Jacques Frédéric Mugnier, Domaine Charles Vienot and Maison Louis Jadot.
