Laguna Cellar Wine of the Month Selection for January 2022

  • La Dame de Montrose 2018, Saint-Estèphe, rated 90-92 (Neal Martin).  Made to the same rigorous standards as the First Wine, from grapes grown in the same vineyard, La Dame de Montrose is the second wine of Château Montrose,  a heavy weight from Saint-Estèphe, just north of Pauillac.  Supple and silky Merlot generally predominates in the varietal mix. Its very pronounced red fruit aromas and flavours reflect another expression of the terroir in a distinctive style which is less elaborately complex than that of the First Wine.  Consistently reliable and reaching maturity sooner, the wine was created in 1983 in tribute to Yvonne Charmolüe, who ran Château Montrose single-handedly from 1944 to 1960. Production varies from one year to another but accounts on average for 40-45% of the total production of the Montrose vineyard. Aged for 12 months in 30% new french oak barrels.
  • Château Fleur Cardinale 2016, Saint-Emilion, rated 95 (Jeb Dunnuck). Château Fleur Cardinale is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé that has been on the rise since the mid 2000s.  The property was purchased in May 2001 by Dominique and Florence Decoster to fulfil their dream of becoming vignerons.  The former business owners who made a name for themselves in the porcelain industry in Limoges were strangers to the Bordeaux wine scene, but that wasn’t going to deter them from making the best wine possible.  For the Decoster family, owning a property like Château Fleur Cardinale is a serious commitment that they devote themselves to in its entirety.  The results speak for themselves, and the wine of this estate is dynamic, expressive and richly concentrated.
  • Château Latour-Martillac 2015, Pessac-Leognan, rated 92-94 (Neal Martin).  Chateau Latour-Martillac takes its name from the tower which stands in the main courtyard of the château; it is the remnant of a fort built in the 12th century by the ancestors of Montesquieu. The structure occupied a strategic position and controlled the route between Bordeaux and Toulouse. The stones of the fort were used to build the existing château at the end of the 18th century.
  • Tenuta Sette Ponti Oreno 2019, Toscana IGT, rated 99 (James Suckling).  This is the 20th anniversary edition from one of the power houses of Toscana (Super Tuscan), the modern rendition of Bordeaux style blend by pioneering Italian winemakers.  The Sette Ponti Estate has been one of the family’s properties since the 1950’s, when Antonio’s father, Alberto bought the initial 50 hectares directly from the princesses Margherita and Maria Cristina Savoia- Aosta. It is located in Chianti, between Arezzo and Florence, and takes its name from the number of bridges that cross the river Arno between the two cities. The first of these bridges, the Buriano Bridge (13th century) can been seen in the background of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

Tasting Notes

La Dame de Montrose 2018 -"The 2018 La Dame de Montrose has a sweet black cherry and crème de cassis scented bouquet, scents of violet developing in the glass. It is like an exaggerated version of the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with thick tannin. There is real volume and density to this La Dame de Montrose, the Cabernet Sauvignon expressive and imparting a graphite like note, despite being proportionately less than the Merlot in the blend. This is a very well crafted La Dame de Montrose that is going to give 15 to 20 years of drinking pleasure." - Neal Martin, vinous (November, 2019)  Ratings: 90-92, Drink: 2022-2042

Château Fleur Cardinale 2016 -"A blend of 74% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2016 Château Fleur Cardinale spent 14 months in new French oak. Deep ruby/purple-colored, with a stunning nose of smoked black fruits, classy oak, violets, and camphor, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, beautiful purity, ripe, present, polished tannins, and a great finish. It's a beautiful wine from this tip-top estate that has the class to keep for two decades or more." Jeb Dunnuck, Bordeaux 2016: Firing On All Cyllinders, Rating: 95

Château Latour-Martillac 2015 - "The 2015 Latour Martillac is a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot matured in 40% new French oak. It has a slightly more high-toned and outgoing bouquet, with dark cherries and blackcurrant aromas, a smidgen of cassis emerging with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a pleasant saltiness here, very focused with a finish of real pedigree. This is a superb Pessac-Léognan from the estate - one of the best in recent years." - Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate (4/27/2016, Issue 224), Ratings: 92-94, Drink: 2021-2045

Tenuta Sette Ponti Oreno 2019 -"Wow. Fantastic aromas of blackberries, currants, minerals, violets and graphite. Full-bodied with firm, silky tannins that are incredibly polished and intense, yet ever so refined and integrated in the wine. It goes on for minutes. The is one of the best modern-day Orenos so far. Best in 2025 and onwards." - James Suckling (july 2021), Ratings: 99

Footnotes on Futures, Pre-Arrivals, and potential US Tariffs:

1. As of June 15, 2021, the US and the EU agreed to suspend tariffs resulting from the Boeing-Airbus aircraft trade disputes. Accordingly, such import taxes are now suspended for the next five years.

2. Futures are expected to be available for delivery two years after the sales (e.g., the 2022 vintage, sold in 2023, will be delivered in 2025 mostly, or 2026 if the producer ages the wine longer).

3. Pre-Arrivals are items currently stored in our Bordeaux cellar or in transit from France to the US. It usually takes 1-6 months for Pre-Arrivals to become available for delivery, depending on the stage of the import process.

4. Regarding futures and pre-arrivals, we cannot guarantee specific delivery dates, which factors beyond our control may impact. However, we will notify you once your wine arrives in our cellar.

5. While a buyer of Bordeaux wine futures locks in an allocation of the specified items, the final delivery of the purchased items from France to the US may be impacted by intervening and unforeseeable events. Despite our due diligence, additional costs or delays may be caused by such intervening and unforeseen events and "an irresistible, superhuman cause, or by the act of public enemies of the state of California or the United States."  In such circumstances, if a buyer does not accept unforeseeable costs or delays, the sole and exclusive remedy is a cancellation of the futures order concerned and a refund of the original purchase price. We are NOT liable for any lost profits on a canceled order.
