Château de Beaucastel Hommage a Jacques Perrin 2016
• Domaine: Château de Beaucastel
• Appellation: Châteauneuf-du-Pape
• Classification: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vallée du Rhône, France
Château de Beaucastel is one of the oldest and most prominent properties within Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the southern Rhône appellation. The estate dates back to the 16th century. The owners of Château de Beaucastel like to say, Beaucastel is, first of all, a family story, the story of Famille Perrin. The late Jacques Perrin, who was considered "by many to be one of Rhône Valley's most brilliant and philosophical winemakers", as noted by famed critic Robert Parker Jr., famously established three principles: 1) a wine must be made naturally, 2) the percentage of Mouvèdre in the blend must be signifant, and 3) the wine's character and intrincic qaulities cannot be compromised by modern technology. He passed away in 1978, leaving the family estate in the capable hands of his sons, Jean-Pierre and François. They carried on Jacques Perrin's traditions while improving the quality of their wine even further. In honor of their father, the sons created this special cuvée from 5 acres of the choicest plot of their vineyard. Hommage à Jacques Perrin is a tribute to Jacques Perrin, literally and figuratively.
Many lovers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape agree if there was one property that captures the rugged wildness mixed with the unbridled, rampant hedonism of this appellation once favored by the Popes, Château de Beaucastel would be it. Beaucastel produces the longest-lived red wine of southern Rhône, using 100% organic methods on its vast vineyard. Its vines have an average age of 50 years, through a meticulous rotational replanting program.
Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin is a true cult wine only produced in the best vintages. Only 400-425 cases are made, making it the rarest offering of Chateau de Beaucstel. Yet, if a buyer is lucky enough to get hold of such a treasure, it is worth the price. The grapes are destemmed, and the wine is aged for 12-18 months in neutral French oak barrels. The grapes are vinified separately. It has tremendous ageing potential, and it is recommended that one cellars it for the long haul.
Tasting Notes
"Tasted three weeks after bottling, I couldn't quite bring myself to give the elusive three-digit score to this admittedly super wine. Perhaps once the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin has been in bottle a bit longer, as Mourvèdre seems to go into a bit of a funk when recently bottled. For now, it's merely profound, packing in savory, mossy nuances, hints of exotic dried spices like star anise and cardamom and layers of rich, plummy fruit that manage to be full-bodied and deliciously intense without being weighty or overwrought. Creamy, lush, intense and long, it's a tdf (tour de force) in CdP." - Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate (8/31/2018, Issue 238), Ratings: 99+, Drink: 2020-2050
"The flagship is the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin, 75% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, 10% Grenache, and the rest Counoise, brought up all in foudre. Blueberries, Peking duck, new saddle leather, black cherries, scorched earth, and an incredible sense of minerality all flow to a massive, concentrated, pure, perfectly balanced 2016 that is a prime example of the old saying, “an iron fist in a velvet glove.” It's a heavenly, perfect wine that's going to live for 30-50 years.
One of the old guards of the region, Château de Beaucastel is nevertheless one of the most progressive and forward-thinking estates out there. They have a wealth of old vine Mourvèdre planted in the northern part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and have purchased heavily in the cooler appellation of Gigondas. They’ve broken the lineup into their Château de Beaucastel releases for the estate wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and several additional cuvées released under their Famille Perrin label. Looking at the 2016s, these wines remind me of how the 2001s tasted on release. They are some of the finest wines in the vintage as well as ever made at the estate. These are classic, concentrated, yet perfectly balanced wines that will benefit from bottle age. In contrast, the 2017s are also brilliant but more forward and charming, and I suspect the preponderance of clay soils at this estate helped dramatically with keeping the vines ripening grapes as opposed to shutting down during this hot, dry vintage." - Jeb Dunnuck, Ratings: 100, Drink: 2022-2052
"Deep vivid magenta. A highly complex bouquet displays candied black and blue fruits, incense and musky earth aromas; violet, licorice and Indian spice notes build in the glass. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering deeply concentrated, mineral-laced blueberry, cherry compote, fruitcake and floral pastille flavors that are given spicy lift and bite by a late peppery flourish. Tightens up slowly on a strikingly long, chewy, floral-driven finish framed by dusty, steadily building tannins." - Josh Raynolds, Vinous, Ratings: 98, Drink: 2028-2040
