Château de Beaucastel is one of the oldest and most prominent properties within Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the southern Rhône appellation.  The estate dates back to the 16th century. The owners of Château de Beaucastel like to say, Beaucastel is, first of all, a family story, the story of Famille Perrin.  The late Jacques Perrin, who was considered "by many to be one of Rhône Valley's most brilliant and philosophical winemakers", as noted by famed critic Robert Parker Jr., famously established three principles: 1) a wine must be made naturally, 2) the percentage of Mouvèdre in the blend must be signifant, and 3) the wine's character and intrincic qaulities cannot be compromised by modern technology. He passed away in 1978, leaving the family estate in the capable hands of his sons, Jean-Pierre and François.  They carried on Jacques Perrin's traditions while improving the quality of their wine even further.  In honor of their father, the sons created this special cuvée from 5 acres of the choicest plot of their vineyard. Hommage à Jacques Perrin is a tribute to Jacques Perrin, literally and figuratively.

Many lovers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape agree if there was one property that captures the rugged wildness mixed with the unbridled, rampant hedonism of this appellation once favored by the Popes, Château de Beaucastel would be it. Beaucastel produces the longest-lived red wine of southern Rhône, using 100% organic methods on its vast vineyard. Its vines have an average age of 50 years, through a meticulous rotational replanting program.

Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin is a true cult wine only produced in the best vintages. Only 400-425 cases are made, making it the rarest offering of Chateau de Beaucstel. Yet, if a buyer is lucky enough to get hold of such a treasure, it is worth the price. The grapes are destemmed, and the wine is aged for 12-18 months in neutral French oak barrels.  The grapes are vinified separately.  It has tremendous ageing potential, and it is recommended that one cellars it for the long haul.

Tasting Notes

"Red-fruited and garrigue-laden, the nose of the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is glorious, showing remarkable complexity in its notes of cherries, raspberries and strawberries, all accented by hints of bay leaf, lavender and thyme, plus deeper bass notes of black olives, roasted meat, espresso, star anise and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and intense, it seems to have added structure since last year, with a firm matrix of tannins holding it all together and lingering on the lengthy finish. Put this Mourvèdre-based blend (approximately 60%) away for five or more years; it should drink well for a couple of decades beyond that." - Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate (12/30/2020, Issue 252), Ratings: 99, Drink: 2025-2045

"Lastly, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin showed beautifully, and while it doesn’t hit the heights of the 2001, 2007, 2010, 2016, or 2017, it’s a beautiful expression of this cuvée that deserves a place in the cellar. Revealing a deep purple hue as well as a kaleidoscope-like array of blueberries, charred meat, graphite, ground pepper, violets, and garrigue, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless texture, building tannins, and a magical finish. It doesn’t have the sheer wealth of material found in truly great vintages and stays compact and focused on the palate, but it has beautiful depth of fruit and intensity as well as a seamlessness to its tannins. I suspect it will be relatively approachable by this cuvee’s standards, yet it still has enough structure and tannins to warrant a solid 7-8 years of bottle age. Given its balance, freshness, and purity, it’s going to age beautifully." - Jeb Dunnuck, Ratings: 97, Drink: 2025-2050

"Inky ruby. Deep-pitched red and dark berry liqueur, candied violet, licorice and Moroccan spice scents show superb detail and a smoky mineral overtone. Densely packed and focused on the palate, offering powerful blueberry, bitter cherry and black raspberry flavors, along with chewing tobacco, floral pastille and fruitcake notes. Hangs on with serious persistence, steadily building tannins and reverberating florality. Two-thousand eighteen was a superb vintage for Mourvèdre, and it shows here, with that variety making up about a third of the blend." - Josh Raynolds, Vinous, Ratings: 97, Drink: 2027-2040

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a renowned wine appellation located in the southern Rhône Valley of southeastern France, around the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Established in 1936 as one of the first Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in France, this prestigious region spans over 3,000 hectares, known for producing both red and white wines of exceptional quality.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is nestled between the picturesque villages of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the nearby towns of Avignon and Orange, offering a unique terroir shaped by the Mistral winds, the surrounding Mediterranean climate, and diverse soil types.

The terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape is defined by sun-heated pebbles (galets) that promote excellent drainage and heat retention, allowing for slow grape ripening and the development of complex flavors. Combined with the region's temperate climate, this unique environment produces wines of great depth and character.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is known for its wide array of grape varieties, with a total of 18 permitted varieties for both red and white wines. Red wines dominate the region, with Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre forming the backbone of most blends. These varieties are complemented by lesser-known grapes such as Cinsault, Counoise, Muscardin, Vaccarèse, Picpoul Noir, and Terret Noir. White wines also play a vital role in the region's production, with key grape varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Clairette Rose, Grenache Gris, and Picpoul Gris.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are known for their rich, full-bodied style, with red wines typically offering bold flavors of ripe fruit, spices, and earthy notes, while the white wines display freshness, floral aromas, and balanced acidity.

3. Pre-Arrivals are items currently stored in our Bordeaux cellar or in transit from France to the US. It usually takes 1-6 months for Pre-Arrivals to become available for delivery, depending on the stage of the import process.

4. Regarding futures and pre-arrivals, we cannot guarantee specific delivery dates, which factors beyond our control may impact. However, we will notify you once your wine arrives in our cellar.

5.
