• Laguna Cellar Wine of the Month

In southern California, the summer is staring us in the face and will be here soon enough.  For the month of May 2019, we bring you a choice of red and white Bordeaux you can enjoy all year around, and particularly in the summer.

This is also the first time we feature a Sauternes, a sweet white Bordeaux wine typically served chilled and famously associated with dessert.  Our friends in Bordeaux tell us one of the most innovative food pairings for Sauternes is with raw oysters, sea urchin, or any naturally salty seafood served as aperitif.  The sweetness of the Sauternes compliments and neutralizes the slightly salty taste of fresh seafood, enhancing the flavor of both food and wine.  Give it a try and let us know what you think.

To broaden your wine horizon, we also present a Bordeaux dry white produced by the featured Sauternes producer.  G de Guiraud has been winning plaudits since its launch.  It is a very refreshing white wine with 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Sémillon, giving it a more complex taste than what is typically marketed as 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

Tasting Notes

Château d'Armailhac 2010 - "Another sensational effort from Philippe Dhaluin, the administrator of Mouton Rothschild, this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot shows complex floral notes intermixed with forest floor, camphor, black currants and mulberries that all jump from the glass of this aromatic style of d’Armailhac. This wine possesses very good acidity, a surprisingly higher percentage of Merlot than usual, but the quality is impressive, and the good news is that there are 20,000 cases of this full-bodied beauty, which should age nicely for 15-20+ years." - Robert Parker Jr., The Wine Advocate (2/27/2013, Issue 205), Ratings: 93, Drink: 2013-2033

Château Giscours 2011 - "Tasted at the Château Giscours vertical, the 2011 Château Giscours is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, picked between September 8 and October 1. It offers more fruit intensity than the 2012 and I find more Margaux florality here. It would benefit from more delineation, but there is decent delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin on the entry, red cherry and raspberry fruit intermingling with cedar and tobacco notes. It feels a little conservative on the finish and needs more finesse, but it is a commendable contribution to the vintage. Tasted June 2015." - Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (7/28/2016, Interim Issue), Ratings: 90, Drink: 2017-2030

Château Guiraud 2009 -"Pale to medium gold colored, the 2009 Guiraud comes sashaying out of the glass with a wonderfully floral nose of jasmine and peach blossoms with an undercurrent of potpourri, dried mango, honey nut, baked pineapple and preserved ginger. The mouth is completely coated with concentrated baking spice and savory layers countering all the rich sweetness, finishing long and layered." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (3/14/2019) Ratings: 94, Drink: 2019-2035

G de Château Guiraud 2015 - "The 2015 G de Château Guiraud offers nectarine, pithy fruit on the nose that needs just a little more delineation. The palate is crisp and fresh with plenty of citrus fruit, dried pineapple and green apples on the energetic finish. Give this a year once in bottle and you'll have a great G de Guiraud." - Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (4/27/2016, Issue 224), Ratings: 89-91, Drink: 2017-2025
