It's summer!  It's always good to have a good white wine for hot summer days.  Not to mention a good white wine produced by a wine estate known as Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Château Lafite Rothchild, L'Evangile, Duhart-Milon, etc).  Coming from the Lafite-owned First Growth Sauternes property of Château Rieussec, R de Rieussec 2016 is a dry white made from a blend of semilion and sauvignon blanc grapes.  Serve it chilled, it is a lovely companion to any summer meals, from salad to seafood.

Château Cos d'Estournel is our favorite. A well-aged Pagodes de Cos, the second wine by Cos, is especially delightful while we patiently wait for the slowly aging grand vin.

This month's selections are:

Tasting Notes

Château Larrivet Haut-Brion 2010 - "A sleeper of the vintage from this under-the-radar estate, this is a complex, fragrant, sexy style of wine with deep ruby purple color, loads of red and black fruits intermixed with caramelized character, supple tannins, a savory and expansive mid-palate and finish, and sweet tannin. I found this wine extremely endearing and far better from bottle than it had shown from barrel. Give it several years of bottle age and drink it over the following two decades." - Robert Parker Jr, The Wine Advocate (2/27/2013, Issue 205), Ratings: 91, Drink: 2015-2035

Chateau Olivier 2015 - "The 2015 Chateau Olivier offers vivacious red cherry and crisp strawberry fruit on the nose, biding its time, gently unfolding in the glass until it takes full flight. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and smooth wild strawberry and raspberry fruit, laced with cedar and a pleasant saltiness. This is one of the best Château Olivier reds in recent years. This is one of the best wines from Chateau Olivier in recent years, thanks to its greater depth and harmony. Laurent Lebrun has done a great job here." -Neal Martin,  Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (4/27/2016, Issue 224) Ratings: 91-92, Drink: 2021-2045

Pagodes de Cos 2009 - "The brilliant 2009 Les Pagodes de Cos actually has more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend than the grand vin (69% versus 65%) in addition to mostly Merlot and a small quantity of Petit Verdot. As powerful as the Cos in terms of alcoholic clout (14.5%), the full-bodied, round, generous Les Pagodes de Cos exhibits lots of creme de cassis and floral notes intermixed with hints of wood/barrique and spice. Juicy, succulent and remarkably fresh and well-delineated, it merits considerable attention from consumers. It should drink well for 15-20 years. Oddly enough, the second wine is superior to many vintages of Cos in the 1960s 1970s and 1980s!" - Robert Parker Jr., The Wine Advocate (12/22/11, Issue 199), Ratings: 94, Drink: 2012-2032

R de Rieussec 2016 - "The 2016 R de Rieussec has a strict and quite stony bouquet with dew-speckled green apples and a touch of freshly sliced pear. The palate is well balanced with touches of peach skin and nectarine, a crisp line of acidity with pleasant salinity towards the finish. Drink this dry white from the Rieussec team over the next five or six years." - Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Ratings: 88-90, Drink: 2018-2023
