Tasting Notes

"The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvee de l’Abeille is striking for the purity of its fruit and its freshness. This is a totally refined wine graced with exquisite nuance, depth and definition. The Cuvee de l’Abeille is a hugely promising wine. This set of 2009s from Laurent Ponsot was among the finest I tasted. The wines are simply dazzling from top to bottom. Ponsot was among the last to harvest in 2009, essentially starting when most, if not all, of his colleagues already had the fruit in their cellars. The fruit was 100% destemmed and the wines were vinified in oak vats. The wines were then racked into barrel for the malos, where many of them stayed with no further rackings. There is no new oak at Ponsot. The barrels range from 5 to 50 years of age. The range now includes a head spinning eleven Grand Crus, which now total an astonishing 70% of the estate’s total production. Ordinarily I would suggest cellaring the top 2009s for a minimum of 15 years or so, but now that Ponsot is bottling all of his wines with synthetic plastic corks made in Italy it is hard to know exactly how the wines will develop. I tasted all of the 2009s from barrel, where they had been aging since finishing their malolactic fermentations." - Antonio Galloni, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (5/1/2011, Issue 194), Rating: 90-93, Drink: 2019-2029

Gevrey-Chambertin is located in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. It lies just south of Dijon and north of Nuits-Saint-Georges, and is one of the most prestigious wine villages in the region. The appellation covers over 409.36 hectares of vineyards including 79.32 hectares Premier Cru, making it the largest village-level AOC in the Côte d'Or. The village of Gevrey was officially allowed to append the name of its most famous Grand Cru vineyard, Chambertin, in 1847, underlining its historic importance in Burgundy.

Viticulture in Gevrey-Chambertin dates back to Roman times, but it was during the Middle Ages, under the stewardship of monastic orders such as the Cistercians, that the vineyards began to gain real prominence. The reputation of Chambertin itself began to rise significantly in the 18th century, even being favored by Napoleon Bonaparte. Over time, the region’s wines gained acclaim across Europe, and the official AOC designation was granted in 1936, preserving its legacy and ensuring consistent quality.

The terroir of Gevrey-Chambertin is characterized by its complex geology and optimal positioning on the gentle slopes of the Côte d'Or escarpment. Soils vary from limestone-rich marl at higher elevations to deeper clay-limestone mixtures lower down, offering excellent drainage and mineral richness. The vineyard includes 26 Premiers Cru Climats.

Red wines are exclusively produced and made with Pinot Noir. Wines from Gevrey-Chambertin are renowned for their robust structure, deep color, and age-worthy character. They typically display aromas of black cherry, blackberry, earthy undertones, and sometimes a touch of game or spice.
