Chassagne-Montrachet appellation is located in the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. Situated along Route des Grands Crus but also on the "golden triangle" of white Burgundy, south of the famed village of Puligny-Montrachet and just north of Santenay. It lies on the eastern slopes of the Côte d’Or escarpment, a limestone ridge that runs through the Burgundy region and creates ideal conditions for viticulture. Chassagne-Montrachet was officially recognized as AOC in 1937.

The village of Chassagne-Montrachet gives its name to this appellation, which covers around 350 hectares of vineyards including approximately 215 hectares for white wines and 92 hectares for red wines. The appellation comprises 55 premier crus, including the best-known :  Cru Morgeot, Clos Saint-Jean, Cru Les Embazées. The commune of Chassagne-Montrachet has also 3 grands crus: Le Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet. The terroir is celebrated for producing high quality white and red wines, though it is most renowned for its exceptional white wines made from Chardonnay grapes. 

The wines of Chassagne-Montrachet are renowned for their distinct character. This appellation is best known for its outstanding white wines made from Chardonnay. These wines are typically rich, full-bodied and expressive. The wines have a rich bouquet with strong aromas, in particular aromas of flowers, citrus, stone fruits like pear or peach. This appellation also produces notable red wines made from Pinot Noir. These wines are elegant, balanced and less tannic than reds from the northern Cote de Nuits but they can still offer depth and structure. Red Chassagne-Montrachet wines are often aromatic with notes of red berries like cherry, raspberry and strawberry along with subtle earthy and floral notes.

Some estates in this appellation are well known, such as : Domaine Vincent Prunier, Domaine Henri de Villamont, Château de la Maltroye, Domaine Olivier Leflaive and Domaine Pierre Girardin.
