Château Kirwan was one of the châteaus actually visited by America's first wine connoisseur, Thomas Jefferson.  At the time, Jefferson thought is was "second in quality behind Margaux, La Tour, Haut-Brion, and La Fite."

Tasting Notes

"Still somewhat tannic but very much in the style that Kirwan has favored over recent vintages, this is a full-bodied, muscular, powerhouse effort. The wine still has a dense ruby/purple color, with loads of blackberries, cassis, and some noticeable new oak still lingering in the background. Powerful, rich, and full, this wine needs another 2-3 years of cellaring and should age nicely for another 20 years." - Robert Parker Jr., The Wine Advocate (6/28/2010, Issue 189), Ratings: 90, Drink: 2012-2032

"With the outstanding 2000 and 2003 vintages, Kirwan is regaining the reputation it deserves.  With a considerable amount of merlot in the blend, Château Kirwan never accounts for more than 65 percent of the harvest.  The wine has the typical black fruit profile of Margaux and is considerably tight and powerful in the more youthful vintages.  The structure and nose become more perfumed and elegant with time, showing its potential to age." Virginia Philip, Best Sommelier of the United States, 2003
