“I have loved every vintage that Christian Moueix has made of Hosanna, which is basically the finest parcel of the vineyard…” - Robert Parker. Chateau Hosanna, formerly known as Chateau Certan-Giraud, is a Bordeaux wine from the Pomerol appellation. The vineyard is situated on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux wine region, within the department of Gironde. Like all wines produced in this appellation, Chateau Hosanna is unclassified, but Certan-Giraud has historically been regarded as one of the great crus of the region.

The history of the name Château Hosanna is linked to the evolution of the property itself, reflecting its journey from its origins as part of the historic Certan estate to its current status as a distinguished winery in Pomerol. Once belonging to the de May family before the French Revolution, the property was formerly part of the extensive Certan domain, alongside Vieux Château Certan and Château Certan-de-May. Over time, the property underwent various name changes, including a period when it was known as Château Certan-Marzelle. In 1956, the property was acquired by the Giraud family, who renamed it Certan-Giraud. Under their ownership, the vineyard flourished, producing distinguished wines that upheld the property's reputation as one of Pomerol's premier crus. However, in 1999, a new chapter began for the property when it was acquired by Christian Moueix and integrated into the portfolio of Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix.

Upon acquiring the property, Christian Moueix sought to honor its heritage while imparting a new identity reflective of its unique character. In consultation with neighboring properties bearing the Certan name, including Vieux Château Certan, Moueix considered renaming it Château Certan. However, objections from Madame Bareau-Bader of Château Certan-de-May led to a different decision. Ultimately, the property was divided, with the larger portion becoming Château Hosanna and a smaller plot producing wines under the name Château Certan Marzelle. This name change marked a new era for the property, highlighting its specificity and reaffirming its commitment to excellence in winemaking. Today, Château Hosanna bears witness to the enduring heritage of Pomerol and the dedication of its guardians to preserving its legacy while embracing the future.

The vineyard area spans 4.5 hectares with grape varieties consisting of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. The annual production averages 18,000 bottles of the Grand vin Château Hosanna. Viticultural practices applied in the vineyard aim to preserve the integrity of the terroir and promote the most authentic expression of the grapes. Careful vineyard management ensures that each vintage of Château Hosanna captures the very essence of its terroir, resulting in wines of exceptional quality and elegance.

Tasting Notes

"Made from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Hosanna is medium to deep garnet-purple in color and sashays out of the glass with beautiful red rose and violets scents over a core of baked blueberries, mulberries and plum preserves plus wafts of vanilla pod and cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed full of perfumed black and blue fruits, supported by ripe, rounded tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing long and fragrant." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate (3/16/2020), Rating: 97+, Drink: 2022-2053

"The 2017 Hosanna was one of my favourite crus from Ets J-P Moueix from barrel. Now in bottle, it remains a delightful Pomerol. It has a generous and beautifully defined bouquet with ample red cherry, crushed strawberry and light black truffle aromas that are actually reminiscent of Bélair-Monange. The palate is medium-bodied but denser, thicker than its peers. There is real substance to this Hosanna that puts the relatively lightweight Certan-de-May in its place. It shows good grip with a saline finish. This is a deeply impressive Hosanna. Rejoice!" Neal Martin, Vinous (2/2020), Rating: 95, Drink: 2023-2048

Pomerol is one of the most prestigious wine appellations in the Bordeaux region of France. Located on the Right Bank of the Dordogne River, in its earlier history, the area was primarily engaged in mixed agriculture. It was home to many apple (“pommes,” in French) orchards that gave the name to the appellation. Its origins date back to the Knights Hospitallers, symbolized by the Pomerol Cross, and it flourished even amidst challenges like the Hundred Years' War. Proximity to the river port at Libourne facilitated exports, and post-World War II investments from French and Belgian investors contributed to its global acclaim.

What sets Pomerol apart is its unique terroir, which includes both clay and gravel, distinguishing it from the traditional clay and limestone composition of Bordeaux's right bank. Merlot dominates, constituting 80% of the plantings, and thrives in the iron-rich clay subsoil called "crasse de fer" and its core of sticky blue clay, imparting distinct character and aging potential to Pomerol wines.

Some of Pomerol's most prominent châteaux include Pétrus, Château La Fleur-Pétrus, Le Pin, Château Trotanoy, Château La Conseillante, Château Clinet, Château L'Eglise Clinet, Château Gazin, Château L'Evangile, Clos du Clocher, and Vieux Château Certan. Pomerol lacks an official classification system; instead, the reputation and quality of châteaux are based on historical performance. Unlike neighboring Saint-Emilion, the appellation exclusively produces red wine, while its white wines remain unclassified.

Pomerol wines are known for their elegance, full body, and lush character, with dark fruit flavors, smooth tannins, and aging potential. While some can be enjoyed in youth, top wines can age gracefully for several decades, developing complexity and character over time.

Footnotes on Futures, Pre-Arrivals, and potential US Tariffs:

1. As of June 15, 2021, the US and the EU agreed to suspend tariffs resulting from the Boeing-Airbus aircraft trade disputes. Accordingly, such import taxes are now suspended for the next five years.

2. Futures are expected to be available for delivery two years after the sales (e.g., the 2022 vintage, sold in 2023, will be delivered in 2025 mostly, or 2026 if the producer ages the wine longer).

3. Pre-Arrivals are items currently stored in our Bordeaux cellar or in transit from France to the US. It usually takes 1-6 months for Pre-Arrivals to become available for delivery, depending on the stage of the import process.

4. Regarding futures and pre-arrivals, we cannot guarantee specific delivery dates, which factors beyond our control may impact. However, we will notify you once your wine arrives in our cellar.

5. While a buyer of Bordeaux wine futures locks in an allocation of the specified items, the final delivery of the purchased items from France to the US may be impacted by intervening and unforeseeable events. Despite our due diligence, additional costs or delays may be caused by such intervening and unforeseen events and "an irresistible, superhuman cause, or by the act of public enemies of the state of California or the United States."  In such circumstances, if a buyer does not accept unforeseeable costs or delays, the sole and exclusive remedy is a cancellation of the futures order concerned and a refund of the original purchase price. We are NOT liable for any lost profits on a canceled order.
