• Domaine: Château Ferran
• Appellation: Pessac-Léognan
• Classification: Grand Vin de Graves, Bordeaux
• Origin: Left Bank, Bordeaux, France

A true gem of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, it is distinguished by its rich history and exceptional terroir. Founded in the 18th century, the estate is closely linked to Montesquieu, the famous French philosopher, who was one of its emblematic owners. The Château Ferran belongs to an old bordeaux family since 1880, the family has continually invested to improve the château and the vineyard has grown to its current size. Philippe and Ghislaine Lacoste took over the running of the vineyard. Since 2018, Thibault Lacoste, the 5th generation of the family, has taken over the management of Château Ferran.

Located in Bordeaux, on the Left Back, in the Pessac-Leognan area of the Graves, the vineyard of Château Ferran spans over 40 hectares benefiting from gravelly soils that give the wines their distinctive character. The region’s temperate climate with oceanic influences allows for optimal ripening of the grapes contributing to the complexity and balance of the wines produced.

The vineyard at Château Ferran is cultivated with meticulous care adhering to sustainable viticulture principles to preserve the environment and soil quality. The red wines are primarily made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a small proportion of Petit Verdot. These wines are characterized by their deep color, intense aromas of black fruits, cassis, plum and subtle notes of tobacco. On the palate, they reveal an elegant tannic structure, great finesse and remarkable aging potential. Château Ferran’s white wines, mainly from Sauvignon Blanc and complemented by Semillon, offer striking freshness and aromatic complexity. The wine is distinguished by its aromas of citrus, white peach, acacia flowers and pronounced minerality. On the palate, the wine presents vibrant acidity, well balanced structure and impressive length.

Château Ferran is appreciated for its commitment to innovation and respect for traditions. The estate continually invests in modern winemaking techniques while honoring the traditional methods that have made Bordeaux wines famous. This harmonious blend of tradition and modernity allows Château Ferran to produce wines making the estate a respected ambassador of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

The 2015 vintage is a blend of three grape varieties: 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Château Ferran 2015 is notable for its dark garnet colored, vibrant, delicious, fruity aromas dominated by black cherry. This vintage stands out for its beautiful, limpid, brilliant appearance. The nose presents a bouquet of red and black berries such as raspberry, strawberry, blackberry and cherry with hints of violet and spice. This 2015 vintage is a very good, well-structured wine with long, high tannin and a floral finish.

Tasting Notes

"Medium garnet-purple, the 2015 Ferran is scented of warm red plums, red currant jelly and mulberries with touches of garrigue, violets and fragrant earth. Medium-bodied, very firm and very ripe with grainy tannins and wonderful freshness, it has loads of perfumed layers and a minerally finish." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2/21/2018, Interim Issue), Rating: 92, Drink from: 2020-2040

"The 2015 Ferran has an attractive bouquet with blackberry, melted tar and cedar notes, quite contained at the moment, but well defined and the oak nicely integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy, slightly jagged tannin on the entry. However, I appreciate the freshness locked into this sample, the tension on the finish. It is not such a well-known estate, but it can produce excellent Pessac-Léognan wines. This could be very interesting once in bottle and could settle at the top of my banded score." - Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (4/27/2016, Issue 224), Ratings: 89-91, Drink: 2020-2040
