In the heart of Bordeaux’s Right Bank lies the historic Château La Dauphine, a property with deep roots in both the region's rich winemaking heritage and French history. Today, Fronsac may not have the same fame as Pauillac, Margaux, or Saint-Emilion, but in the 18th century, its wines were among the finest, commanding higher prices than even those from Saint-Emilion and Pomerol. Fronsac was once Bordeaux's shining star, and Château La Dauphine stands as a proud testament to that bygone era.

As the largest vineyard in Fronsac, Château La Dauphine is on an inspiring comeback, drawing on centuries of tradition and heritage to craft wines that are garnering serious attention from wine enthusiasts. The estate’s history is intertwined with royalty and legend: from its ties to Charlemagne, who established a fortress in Fronsac, to Cardinal de Richelieu, who owned the land and made its wines beloved by the French nobility. The château’s name honors Marie Josepha of Saxony, the mother of Louis XVI, known as "La Dauphine" the title given to the French queen’s mother-in-law, whose tragic fate was intertwined with the rise and fall of the Bourbon monarchy.

Today, Château La Dauphine is redefining Fronsac wines for a new generation. With vineyards that stretch across the clay-limestone slopes of the Dordogne River, the estate produces wines that embody the power and elegance of the Right Bank, with a character and complexity that rival the best Bordeaux has to offer. While much of the focus in Bordeaux has shifted to the likes of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, Château La Dauphine is reclaiming its rightful place among the finest properties of the region.

For the modern wine drinker seeking exceptional Bordeaux wines without the sky-high prices of some of the more hyped appellations, Château La Dauphine represents both a nod to history and a glimpse into Bordeaux's future. With a focus on quality, terroir, and sustainable practices, these wines offer a thrilling experience for those in the know. For anyone who appreciates elegance, depth, and a story steeped in tradition, Château La Dauphine is a name that should be on your radar.

Tasting Notes

"The 2019 de la Dauphine has a superb nose with pure blackberry, boysenberry and crushed stone aromas, hints of iris and violet emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, grainy tannins, fine depth and an unerring sense of symmetry on the finish. Yet another great Fronsac.." - Neal Martin, Vinous, (06/16/2020), Ratings: 92-94

"The 2019 La Dauphine is a total knock-out. Rich, heady and explosive, La Dauphine possesses terrific energy and tons of volume. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, tobacco, spice, new leather and chocolate all build in the glass. The 2019 is drop-dead gorgeous. Don't miss it." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, (02/28/2022), Ratings: 93

"Black cherry and cocoa bean dominant, with grilled oak notes with a lovely juicy undercurrent running through, giving a mouthwatering finish. Great quality, a ton of drinking pleasure on offer. 40h/ha yield, 30% new oak for ageing. Certified organic." - Jane Anson, (10/22/2021), Ratings: 93, Drink: 2023-2036

The Fronsac appellation is located in Bordeaux on the Right Bank of the Dordogne river, a few kilometers to the west of Libourne. Fronsac lies to the west of the prestigious Saint-Emilion and Pomerol appellations. This appellation offers wines with a distinguished heritage and exceptional quality.

Fronsac benefits from a diverse and unique terroir featuring limestone plateaus and clay-limestone slopes. These soils coupled with the temperate climate provide ideal conditions for vine growth.

Merlot is the dominant grape variety completed by Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. This blend creates wines with lush fruit profiles and refined structure. Fronsac wines are recognized for their deep ruby color and complex aromas of black fruits. These wines have a good aging potential often developing greater complexity over 8 to 15 years.

The Fronsac appellation is a testament to the diversity and quality of Bordeaux’s right bank. Fronsac deserves recognition among wine enthusiasts for its distinctive character and excellent value.

Footnotes on Futures, Pre-Arrivals, and potential US Tariffs:

1. On June 15, 2021, the US and the EU agreed to suspend tariffs resulting from the Boeing-Airbus aircraft trade disputes. The Trump Administration has announced plans to impose new tariffs on global trade. Until further notice, the price of Futures and Pre-Arrivals offered on this site does NOT include any tariffs. Additional charges may apply at the time of delivery.

2. Futures are expected to be available for delivery two years after the sales (e.g., the 2022 vintage, sold in 2023, will be delivered in 2025 mostly, or 2026 if the producer ages the wine longer).

3. Pre-Arrivals are items currently stored in our Bordeaux cellar or in transit from France to the US. It usually takes 1-6 months for Pre-Arrivals to become available for delivery, depending on the stage of the import process.

4. Regarding futures and pre-arrivals, we cannot guarantee specific delivery dates, which factors beyond our control may impact. However, we will notify you once your wine arrives in our cellar.

5. While a buyer of Bordeaux wine futures locks in an allocation of the specified items, the final delivery of the purchased items from France to the US may be impacted by intervening and unforeseeable events. Despite our due diligence, additional costs or delays may be caused by such intervening and unforeseen events and "an irresistible, superhuman cause, or by the act of public enemies of the state of California or the United States."  In such circumstances, if a buyer does not accept unforeseeable costs or delays, the sole and exclusive remedy is a cancellation of the futures order concerned and a refund of the original purchase price. We are NOT liable for any lost profits on a canceled order.
