Laguna Cellar Wine of the Month Selection for April 2021

  • Château Berliquet 2010 - This is one of the oldest properties in the Right Bank appellation of Saint-Émilion.  This 10-hectare vineyard is planted with an even split of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.  The philosophy of vignerons here is about capturing the tension of the limestone and the strength of clay terroir in every vintage.  Starting in 2007, the legendary Nicolas Thienpont of the famed Saint Émilion Premiere Grand Crus Classé Class ‘B’ estate, Château Pavie Macquin,  and well-known consultant Stephan Derenoncourt began advising this property.  Quality since then has skyrocketed as these gifted vignerons began implementing cutting edge technology such as optical sorting in 2009.  In 2017, Château Berliquet was acquired by the Chanel Group, the famous fashion label which also owns the Second Growth property in Margaux, Château Rauzan Ségla.  The 2010 vintage of Château Berliquet provides the wine drinker an excellent opportunity to step back in time and experience what was produced during the reign of two brilliant vignerons.
  • Château Faugères 2016 - This estate boasts one of the most modern winemaking facilities in Saint-Émilion.  Yet despite its sleek futuristic appearance, the property dates all the way back to 1619.  Throughout the centuries, Château Faugères has steadily increased in terms of quality but the most significant leap in terms of critical acclaim happened during the 21st Century.  Since 2009, owner and former titian of the perfume industry, Silvio Denz, completed a very extensive renovation of this illustrious Right Bank estate.  The architectural marvel was designed by the famous architect, Mario Botta and hosts some of the most cutting-edge winemaking technology. Château Faugères focuses on sustainably, farming their 49 hectares of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.  Because of the cooler climate, clay, and limestone soils, the wines from this estate have good acidity. Château Faugères also has some of the top viticultural talent assisting Silvio Denz in the winemaking process -- the incomparable Michel Rolland.  Michel Rolland brings his experience from other top-notch Saint-Émilion estates like Château Angélus and it is clear he is already influencing the trajectory of more recent vintages. For this estate, it is clear the best is yet to come.
  • Saintayme 2017 - This is yet another fantastic offering of the recently deceased Pomerol legend, Denis Durantou.  Durantou’s legacy stems from transforming the fortunes of the star Pomerol estate L’Eglise Clinet with his key attention to detail, sharp insight, and gift for handling the often-misunderstood varietal, Merlot.  Durantou also had a spectacular knack for making value-driven wines in Pomerol - an appellation notorious for exorbitantly high prices.  Saintayme is yet another example of his tremendous prowess, precision, and light touch that made a world of difference in terms of winemaking.  The terroir at Saintayme is a small 9 hectares, planted almost exclusively with Merlot.  There is a mixture of limestone, gravel, and clay soils and the temperature here is a bit cooler than other parts of Saint-Émilion.  Because of this unique terroir, Merlot is able to retain a stylistic elegance and freshness in addition to having tremendous aging potential.  The 2017 vintage is one of Denis Durantou’s last vintages, providing fans of this highly gifted vigneron an incredible opportunity to experience his legacy.
  • Henri de Villamont Chambolle-Musigny 2018 - Those fortunate enough to take a trip to Burgundy should visit the impressive, brick estate just outside the center of Savigny-lès-Beaune that is Maison Henri de Villamont.  This picturesque property is one of the oldest in the region, and has a history dating back to the late 17th Century when it was owned by the Bocquet family. The property changed hands throughout the ages, but it wasn’t until a little over a century later, when the estate was acquired by the Swiss group Schenk Holdings in 1964 that it received the name Henri de Villamont.  Legend has it that a crusading knight named Henri had retired in Savigny and taken over several of the vineyards in the area.  The property became a consistent producer with great capacity to create wines from all the major communes of Burgundy.  In 2005, a massive renovation was made at the estate featuring rows of temperature-controlled fermentation tanks.  Yet despite its capacity to produce great quantities of wine, Henri de Villamont does not sacrifice quality.  Since 1999, Pierre Jhéan has been in charge of the winemaking at the property and specializes in expressing the individual terroirs of each commune in this region.  Wines from this estate have depth, complexity, weight and elegance while capturing the individual terroirs of each commune.

Tasting Notes

Château Berliquet 2010 - "A strong effort from Berliquet, the 2010 was fashioned from yields of 23 hectoliters per hectare by the managing consultant, Nicholas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt.  Composed of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, it offers copious aromas of sweet kirsch liqueur, underbrush, plums and black cherries.  This mineral-laced, deep, medium to full-bodied, moderately tannic, broad, savory St.-Emilion exhibits more power and depth than past vintages.  Drink it over the next 10-15 years." - Robert Parker Jr (5/1/2011, Issue 194) Rating: 90-93

Château Faugères 2016 - "The 2016 Faugeres is a blend of 85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon matured in 60% new oak. It has a ripe black cherry and cassis scented bouquet, just a touch of volatility although that should disappear by the time it is in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. This has good backbone and fresh acidity, nicely focused with a taut, quite linear finish that feels more restrained and classic in style than previous vintages. Superb." - Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (4/28/2017, Issue 230), Ratings: 92-94, Drink: 2023-2045

Saintayme 2017 - "Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Saintayme delivers expressive black cherries, mulberries and boysenberries scents with hints of rosehip tea, tilled soil and spice box. Medium-bodied, the palate has plenty of juicy red and black fruits with a plush texture and refreshing finish." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate (3/16/20), Ratings: 90, Drink: 2020-2032

Henri de Villamont Chambolle-Musigny 2018 - "Chambolle-Musigny is a red wine, often regarded as the most "feminine" wine of the Côte de Nuits; its intensity and delicacy express themselves with elegance and subtlety.  To the eye, it presents a bright ruby hue with luminous highlights.  It may darken a little over time but with no loss of impact.  Its bouquet, easily recognizable, is composed of violet and small red fruits (raspberry, strawberry).  With further aging it tends towards spiced ripe fruits and prune, or towards truffle, underbrush and animal notes.  Rich, fragrant and complex, it lines the palate with silk and lace.  Its delicate but fleshy texture in no way detracts from its solid and durable structure.  On the sweet side with little trace of acidity, its tannins remain silky smooth." - The Bourgogne Wine Board, Not Rated

4. Regarding futures and pre-arrivals, we cannot guarantee specific delivery dates, which factors beyond our control may impact. However, we will notify you once your wine arrives in our cellar.

5. While a buyer of Bordeaux wine futures locks in an allocation of the specified items, the final delivery of the purchased items from France to the US may be impacted by intervening and unforeseeable events.
