Puligny-Montrachet is located in the center of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. Nestled between the villages of Meursault to the north and Chassagne-Montrachet to the south, Puligny-Montrachet lies at the foot of the Cote d’Or escarpment.
The history of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation is deeply rooted in the Burgundy regions dating back to Roman times. The village of Puligny itself has been producing wine for centuries but it truly began to gain recognition in the Middle Ages when Cistercian monks from the nearby Abbey played a significant role in cultivating the vineyards. In 1879, the village of Puligny officially appended “Montrachet” to its name, distinguishing it from other nearby wine villages and emphasizing its connection to the iconic Grand Cru vineyard “Le Montrachet” vineyards. The appellation was formally recognized in 1937.
The prime location offers a combination of limestone-rich soils and a cool continental climate. The vineyard spans over 235 hectares on which 17 premiers crus climats are presented among the best known : Champgain, Les Pucelles, Les Demoiselles, Les Perrières. This appellation has also 4 grands crus located in the southern part of Puligny Montrachet bordering on Chassagne-Montrachet.
Puligny-Montrachet produces white and red wines with very strong characters. The white wines are made with Chardonnay grape variety, they have a bright gold color with greenish highlights that become more intense with age. They present a gourmet bouquet with aromas of grapefruit, almond, hazelnut, lemon, green apple and honey. Red wines, on the other hand, made with Pinot Noir, have a bright ruby color when they are young, darkening with age.
Red wine is almost disappearing due to the reputation of the white wines. Red wine from the defined area of this appellation may use the alternative appellation “Côte de Beaune Village”.
