Northern Rhône

The Northern Rhône is the smaller but more rarefied half of the Rhône Valley, a narrow corridor of steep, granite-terraced slopes hugging the river south of Lyon. Production is tiny, and the wines are among France's most sought-after.

Here Syrah reigns supreme as the sole red grape, giving the smoky, peppery, profoundly age-worthy wines of Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and Cornas, with Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage offering more accessible expressions. At their best, these are reds of extraordinary depth and perfume.

The region's whites are equally distinguished: the heady, apricot-scented Viognier of Condrieu and Château-Grillet, and the rich, long-lived Marsanne and Roussanne blends of white Hermitage. Concentrated and complex, the wines of the Northern Rhône are benchmarks of their grapes.
