Châteauneuf-du-Pape, literally translated as “the new castle of the Pope”, is nicknamed “The Bordeaux of the Rhône”.  It is the southernmost appellation in Rhône – a mere fifteen-minute drive from the historic city of Avignon (pictured above).  Avignon was made famous by the historically prominent French Pope, Clement V, who chose to relocate the papacy to this French city.  Pope Clement was the archibishop of Bordeaux before his elevation to the papacy.  He left behind his family estate in Pessac-Léognan, which was later named Château Pape Clement

Châteauneuf-du-Pape primarily produces red wines. There are also white wines in this region and when they are done properly the result is truly astonishing.  A cornucopia of grapes are planted here.  Red grapes here consist of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Muscardin, Counoise, Vaccarèse, and Teret Noir.  The white grapes planted in this region are Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourblenc, Rousanne, Picpoul, and Picardan.
