Tuscany

Tuscany is the heartland of Italian fine wine, a sun-warmed landscape of cypress-lined hills where the Sangiovese grape finds its greatest expression. Bright with cherry fruit, savoury herbs, and firm acidity, Sangiovese is the backbone of the region's most famous reds.

Its classic appellations are a roll call of renown: Chianti Classico in the hills between Florence and Siena, the powerful and long-lived Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Each offers a distinct take on Tuscany's signature grape.

From the 1970s, the coastal zone of Bolgheri gave birth to the Super Tuscans — Bordeaux-style blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sangiovese — with estates such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Tignanello earning global acclaim and rewriting the rules of Italian wine.
