Piedmont
Piedmont, in the foothills of the Alps in northwest Italy, is one of the country's two greatest wine regions and the realm of the noble Nebbiolo grape. The name evokes the autumn fog — nebbia — that blankets the rolling Langhe hills as the late-ripening variety reaches maturity.
At its summit stand Barolo and Barbaresco, Nebbiolo's most exalted expressions: powerful, tannic, and intensely aromatic reds, famous for their "tar and roses" perfume and their ability to age for decades. The region also gives the juicy, everyday charms of Barbera and Dolcetto.
