Regional appellations form the foundation of Burgundy's classification pyramid — the wines, led by Bourgogne Rouge and Bourgogne Blanc, that may be sourced from across the wider region rather than a single village. They account for the largest share of Burgundy's output and its most approachable prices.
Made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (with Aligoté and Gamay also playing a role), regional wines frequently come from respected growers' younger vines or from parcels just outside a famous boundary — an honest, affordable introduction to a domaine's house style.
