Premier Cru
Premier Cru is the second-highest tier in Burgundy's four-level hierarchy, ranking above Village wines and just below the Grands Crus. The status belongs to specific, named vineyard parcels — climats — that have proven, over generations, to give wine of superior quality.
A Premier Cru is always identified by both its village and its vineyard, as in Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru "Les Cazetiers" or Meursault Premier Cru "Les Genevrières." The named climat is the grower's signpost to a distinct expression of terroir.
Often offering much of the depth and complexity of a Grand Cru at a more accessible price, Premiers Crus are, for many enthusiasts, the sweet spot of Burgundy — wines of real individuality, ageworthiness, and sense of place.
