• Origin: Left Bank, Bordeaux, France

The name of this wine, created at the beginning of the 20th century when the vineyard was planted, was inspired by the Petit Clos adjacent to the Château de Léoville, residence of the Marquis de Las Cases. Clos du Marquis is a historical brand by the Domaines Delon, a separate vineyard to Leoville Las Cases whose first vintage was released in 1902.

The creation of this brand was to allow a clear identification of two completely distinct terroirs. The situation remains unchanged today as the vineyard producing the Clos du Marquis is located on top terroirs of the Saint Julien appellation, surrounded by such prestigious Classified Growths as Léoville Poyferré and Léoville Barton.

The heart of the Clos du Marquis vineyard is 500 metres west of the famous walled enclosure of Léoville Las Cases known as the ‘Enclos’. It is made up of quaternary gravel that is older and finer than the Enclos gravel.
Most of its vines stretch over about 45 hectares (111 acres) with an average age of thirty years. The presence of organic matter in the top soil, due to the presence of a forest on this land in the past, brings a typical Saint-Julien style to the Clos du Marquis. The grapes ripen later in this vineyard than in the Enclos, the latter being warmed by the micro-climate of the nearby Gironde river.
This part of the vineyard, planted on the Saint-Julien plateau, 20 metres above sea level, is composed of humic podzol over sandy-clay gravel. The Clos du Marquis terroir is characterised by a greater regularity in the soil types as well as a higher hydrological sensitivity than the Enclos that possesses a natural drainage system thanks to the slope of the land and its proximity to the river.

This great Terroir so typically Saint-Julien has produced a great Clos du Marquis, with splendid concentration and a distinction worthy of the greatest wines of the appellation. A demonstration of gentle power combining sapidity and richness, offering a touch of sapidity on the finish.

Tasting Notes

"A beautiful Saint-Julien, the 2021 Clos Du Marquis reveals a healthy ruby/plum hue as well as incredibly pure notes of darker berries, graphite, spice box, and a kiss of leafy tobacco. This medium-bodied, focused, nicely concentrated 2021 has ripe, polished tannins, terrific balance, and the overall class to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for two decades. It's a beautiful wine that I'd happy to have in the cellar." Jeb Dunnuck, (04/03/2024), Ratings: 92, Drink: 2028-2049

"The 2021 Clos du Marquis is a potent, heady wine. Blue fruits, lavender, licorice, pencil shavings and crushed rocks all race across the palate. This is classic Saint-Julien in bearing. A wine of substance and class, Clos du Marquis is quite impressive in this vintage, opening beautifully over time." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, (02/28/2024), Ratings: 92

"The 2021 Clos du Marquis is a lovely wine, offering up aromas of cherries, burning embers, dark berries, loamy soil and truffle, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety wine that's rather deep and serious, reflecting low yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare and a blend dominated by 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 19% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc in supporting roles. Lest anyone underestimate it on the strength of the challenging vintage alone, by the numbers it contains a higher concentration of polyphenols than either the 2019 or 2020 vintages. Tasted three times." - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate, (04/29/2022), Ratings: 91-93+

"这应该是我第一次品鉴品丽珠达到14%的Clos du Marquis。舒畅悠扬的紫罗兰花香伴随着绵柔的莓果芬芳在味蕾上延伸,收尾时还泛着丝丝奶油蓝莓的甜美回甘。这款酒表现出的香气复杂度以及口中的浓郁度远远超出2021年份的平均水准,毫无疑问,是该年份梅多克非列级庄中表现十分出挑的选手。" - Alexandre Ma, Ratings: 92-93

Saint-Julien is a prestigious wine appellation located in the Medoc region on the Left Bank along the Gironde estuary at the heart of Bordeaux. Known for its exceptional red wines, Saint-Julien benefits from a strategic geographical position between Pauillac and Margaux giving it a unique terroir.

The viticultural history of Saint-Julien dates back several centuries, with deep roots in the winemaking traditions of Bordeaux. The appellation's soil is primarily composed of gravel, a mix of pebbles, sand, and clay that offers excellent drainage and contributes to the production of high-quality wines.

The wines of Saint-Julien are mainly made from the traditional Bordeaux grape varieties such as Saint-Estèphe appellation. The principal grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Thanks to these grape varieties and ancestral winemaking expertise, Saint-Julien wines are distinguished by their finesse, aromatic complexity and remarkable aging potential. Saint-Julien wines are often described as harmonious and elegant, with aromas of black fruits, cedar, and mineral notes. Their balanced tannic structure and silky texture make them highly appreciated by amateurs of fine wines.

Some of Saint-Julien wines are Third Growths and five of these Saint-Julien are highly rated Second Growths: Château Léoville Poyferré, Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Léoville Barton, Château Gruaud Larose and Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. Other famous estates include Château Lagrange, Château Beychevelle, Château Langoa Barton, Château Clos du Marquis, Château Gloria, Château Talbot, Château Saint-Pierre, Château Branaire Ducru.

Footnotes on Futures, Pre-Arrivals, and potential US Tariffs:

1. On June 15, 2021, the US and the EU agreed to suspend tariffs resulting from the Boeing-Airbus aircraft trade disputes. The Trump Administration has announced plans to impose new tariffs on global trade. Until further notice, the price of Futures and Pre-Arrivals offered on this site does NOT include any tariffs. Additional charges may apply at the time of delivery.

2. Futures are expected to be available for delivery two years after the sales (e.g., the 2022 vintage, sold in 2023, will be delivered in 2025 mostly, or 2026 if the producer ages the wine longer).

3. Pre-Arrivals are items currently stored in our Bordeaux cellar or in transit from France to the US. It usually takes 1-6 months for Pre-Arrivals to become available for delivery, depending on the stage of the import process.

4. Regarding futures and pre-arrivals, we cannot guarantee specific delivery dates, which factors beyond our control may impact. However, we will notify you once your wine arrives in our cellar.

5. While a buyer of Bordeaux wine futures locks in an allocation of the specified items, the final delivery of the purchased items from France to the US may be impacted by intervening and unforeseeable events. Despite our due diligence, additional costs or delays may be caused by such intervening and unforeseen events and "an irresistible, superhuman cause, or by the act of public enemies of the state of California or the United States."  In such circumstances, if a buyer does not accept unforeseeable costs or delays, the sole and exclusive remedy is a cancellation of the futures order concerned and a refund of the original purchase price. We are NOT liable for any lost profits on a canceled order.
