Clos du Marquis is a secret garden adjacent to the esteemed Second Growth estate, Château Léoville Las Cases.  Though the vines are tended to by the same talented viticultural team and the know-how of the illustrious DeLeon family influences the trajectory of this wine, it would be wrong to assume Clos du Marquis is a second wine.  Clos du Marquis is its own unique label, and a textbook expression of some of the choicest Saint-Julién terroir adjacent to the prestigious estate.  This beautiful wine is a stunning example of some of the choicest terroirs of Saint-Julién, surrounded by excellent properties like Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Poyferré and Léoville Barton.   For value-oriented consumers who appreciate the supple beauty of a good Saint-Julién that will not break the bank, look no further than Clos du Marquis.

Clos du Marquis is a mere 500 meters from the walled off vineyards of Château Léoville Las Cases.   For those who know their history, they will remember that Château Léoville Las Cases was a portion of the vast Léoville estate.  The estate was sectioned off into the following properties: Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Léoville Barton, and Château Léoville Poyferré.  The vineyard of Clos du Marquis was planted by the talented team at Léoville Las Cases in 1902 and is still tended to by the team of this Second Growth estate today.  It is the only non-enclosed vineyard to be named, “Clos.”  It is illegal nowadays to do that.  The location of the Petit Clos, adjacent to the vineyards of Léoville Las Cases where the Marquis de las Cases used to reside, inspired the creation of this wine.  The terroir held much promise, and it seemed to be a crime to not explore the potential of this land.

At Clos du Marquis, the elevation is a serviceable 20 meters above sea level.  There is a great slope to the property, which is excellent for drainage during particularly rainy months.   The gravel here is older and finer than the Enclos gravel at Léoville Las Cases, and there is plenty of organic matter which gives nutrients to the vines.  This is because there used to be a forest at the property. The vines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc are approximately 35 years old on average, though some are closer to 45 years of age. Cabernet Sauvignon does particularly well here, as this fine gravel is excellent for drainage during rainy months.  The grapes ripen a little later here than the grapes growing at Léoville Las Cases and the resulting wine possesses all the classic elements of a truly great Saint-Julién. One can expect to experience finesse, structure, harmony and plenty of ageing potential with this wine.

Clos du Marquis is a little more approachable than its more powerful, tannic cousin, Château Léoville Las Cases.  One can enjoy it a bit on the younger side with a few hours of decanting, yet with all that in mind, the wine can age for a decent period of time.

Tasting Notes

"I continue to just love this terroir. The 2019 Clos Du Marquis brings beautiful richness and depth with the purity and elegance of the vintage. Cassis, smoked black cherries, tobacco, gravelly earth, and spice are just some of the nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a rich, dense mid-palate, serious, almost chewy tannins, and a great finish. It's not for those looking for instant gratification and demands a good decade of bottle age." - Jeb Dunnuck, (04/12/2022), Ratings: 94

"The 2019 Clos du Marquis is another cuvée from the Delon family that’s smaller than usual this year, as fully 20% of the vineyards that inform this bottling are in various stages of replanting, with the objective of bringing the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon vines up to more than 70%. Exhibiting aromas of inky cassis, plums, incense, wood smoke and spices, it’s medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, with lively acids, beautifully powdery tannins and a supple, more immediately charming profile than its big sibling across the street, Léoville-Las Cases." - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate, (04/07/2022), Ratings: 94

"The 2019 is an exuberant, plush Clos du Marquis packed with inky, dark fruit. All the signatures of Saint-Julien and this estate are all amplified in the glass. Licorice, lavender, spice and mocha develop, adding gorgeous layers to this decidedly extroverted Clos du Marquis. I haven't always been thrilled with how Clos du Marquis ages, but for drinking over the near and medium term, the 2019 is positively stellar." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, (02/28/2022), Ratings: 94

Saint-Julien is a prestigious wine appellation located in the Medoc region on the Left Bank along the Gironde estuary at the heart of Bordeaux. Known for its exceptional red wines, Saint-Julien benefits from a strategic geographical position between Pauillac and Margaux giving it a unique terroir.

The viticultural history of Saint-Julien dates back several centuries, with deep roots in the winemaking traditions of Bordeaux. The appellation's soil is primarily composed of gravel, a mix of pebbles, sand, and clay that offers excellent drainage and contributes to the production of high-quality wines.

The wines of Saint-Julien are mainly made from the traditional Bordeaux grape varieties such as Saint-Estèphe appellation. The principal grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Thanks to these grape varieties and ancestral winemaking expertise, Saint-Julien wines are distinguished by their finesse, aromatic complexity and remarkable aging potential. Saint-Julien wines are often described as harmonious and elegant, with aromas of black fruits, cedar, and mineral notes. Their balanced tannic structure and silky texture make them highly appreciated by amateurs of fine wines.

Some of Saint-Julien wines are Third Growths and five of these Saint-Julien are highly rated Second Growths: Château Léoville Poyferré, Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Léoville Barton, Château Gruaud Larose and Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. Other famous estates include Château Lagrange, Château Beychevelle, Château Langoa Barton, Château Clos du Marquis, Château Gloria, Château Talbot, Château Saint-Pierre, Château Branaire Ducru.

Footnotes on Futures, Pre-Arrivals, and potential US Tariffs:

1. On June 15, 2021, the US and the EU agreed to suspend tariffs resulting from the Boeing-Airbus aircraft trade disputes. The new Trump Administration has announced plans to impose new tariffs on global trade. Until further notice, the price of Futures and Pre-Arrivals offered on this site does NOT include any tariffs. Additional charges may apply at the time of delivery.

2. Futures are expected to be available for delivery two years after the sales (e.g., the 2022 vintage, sold in 2023, will be delivered in 2025 mostly, or 2026 if the producer ages the wine longer).

3. Pre-Arrivals are items currently stored in our Bordeaux cellar or in transit from France to the US. It usually takes 1-6 months for Pre-Arrivals to become available for delivery, depending on the stage of the import process.

4. Regarding futures and pre-arrivals, we cannot guarantee specific delivery dates, which factors beyond our control may impact. However, we will notify you once your wine arrives in our cellar.

5. While a buyer of Bordeaux wine futures locks in an allocation of the specified items, the final delivery of the purchased items from France to the US may be impacted by intervening and unforeseeable events. Despite our due diligence, additional costs or delays may be caused by such intervening and unforeseen events and "an irresistible, superhuman cause, or by the act of public enemies of the state of California or the United States."  In such circumstances, if a buyer does not accept unforeseeable costs or delays, the sole and exclusive remedy is a cancellation of the futures order concerned and a refund of the original purchase price. We are NOT liable for any lost profits on a canceled order.
