Nestled within the picturesque Saint-Émilion region, Château Bellefont-Belcier stands as a living testament to a rich history seamlessly blending with a modern commitment to excellence in winemaking. The vineyard extends over 13.5 hectares. This remarkable château traces its roots back to the 18th century when it served as a formidable fortress, commanding a panoramic view of the undulating landscape. Over the centuries, Château Bellefont-Belcier has gracefully evolved into a refined estate, preserving its historical charm through remnants like a medieval guard tower, a stoic witness to the passage of time.
The 18th century brought an architectural gem to the estate, solidifying its grandeur. The fortuitous acquisition by the Beaumont family in 1945 marked a pivotal moment for Château Bellefont-Belcier. Under their dedicated stewardship, the estate experienced a renaissance, with a laser focus on revitalizing vineyards and embracing sustainable winemaking practices.
The vineyards, home to 35-year-old Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon vines, proudly employ 100% organic techniques, showcasing the estate's unwavering dedication to environmental responsibility. While eschewing formal organic certification, Château Bellefont-Belcier holds the esteemed HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification, a testament to its commitment to biodiversity, reduced environmental impact, and efficient water management.
In a strategic move reminiscent of Château Laroque's success with the primeur system, Château Bellefont-Belcier embraced a similar approach with the 2020 vintage. This savvy decision, aligning with financial market dynamics, allowed enthusiasts and collectors to secure exceptional wines at advantageous prices. The move not only delighted discerning palates but also positioned Château Bellefont-Belcier as a rising star in the illustrious Saint-Émilion appellation.
The estate's dedication to innovation extends to its state-of-the-art winemaking facilities, where traditional techniques intertwine seamlessly with cutting-edge technology. This commitment ensures that each bottle of Bellefont-Belcier wine reflects the unique terroir and meticulous craftsmanship that defines the estate.
With each passing vintage, the estate continues to carve its place among the distinguished Grand Cru Classé properties, offering wines that harmoniously blend history, terroir, and contemporary winemaking expertise. Château Bellefont-Belcier, a beacon of tradition and innovation, remains a name to watch in the world of fine wines, captivating enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike with its exceptional vintages and unwavering commitment to the art of winemaking.
“Concentrated deep plum colour, beautifully measured capturing the power of the vintage without being overblown. Opens with a burst of fresh red roses and violets on the nose, and the black cherry and damson fruits are shot through with a ton of saffran and turmeric. Mouthwatering sapidity on the finish, this is a brilliant Bellefont Belcier and absolutely one to look out for. 40hl/h yield; 30% new oak barrels for ageing, together with 30% unusual egg-shaped wooden vats, and the rest between one and two year old barrels. Emmanuelle Fulchi d'Aligny techincal director, moving over from Château Angélus, and this is the first full vintage under her direction (just did the blend of 2021).” - Jane Anson, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux (April 2023), 95/100, Drink 2030–2046
“The 2020 Bellefont Belcier is a terrific follow up to the excellent 2019. Wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, licorice, bay leaf and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and refined, with lovely depth at the core, vibrant acids and a long, chalky finish. It's great to see one of Saint-Émilion's sleeping giants awakening.” - William Kelley, Robert Parker Wine Advocate (April 2023), 94+/100, Drink 2025–2050
“The finest wine I've tasted from this estate, the 2020 Château Bellefont-Belcier is an incredibly gorgeous blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep ruby/purple-hued, it offers a great nose of cassis, ripe black cherries, camphor, dried flowers, cedar, and forest floor. Bringing gorgeous richness, it nevertheless stays flawlessly balanced, with ultra-fine tannins and a great finish. The purity of fruit here is just about off the charts. While it already offers pleasure, it's going to benefit from short-term cellaring and have 20-25 years of prime drinking. This estate uses a five-day cold soak and fermentation, all in concrete, spanning 25 days. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel (four months on lees), and the wine spends 18 months in 30% new French oak, with the balance in once- and twice-used barrels. Yields in 2020 were also reasonable at 34 hectoliters per hectare.” - Jeb Dunnuck, Jeb Dunnuck (March 2023), 98/100, Drink 2026–2048
